Story: Turgus and the Temple

Unread post by Turgus »

The cries of many animals rose from the jungle foliage as he stepped into the vegetation, monkeys, birds and others he couldn’t identify. His presence had not gone unnoticed.
The tall green skinned troll clad in pirate regalia slowly pushed the curtain of leaves apart and carefully stepped on the roots of one of the trees as to not step into the soft ground that covered the jungle floor. As he made his way deeper and deeper into the rainforest the animals quieted down, as if they had accepted his presence, or maybe they were just a bit afraid of him or more likely, of his companion.
A rustling of vegetation and the snap of a breaking branch made Turgus look behind him. A ways behind him lumbered his companion, a large green devilsaur named Chomper.
He saw the big guy carefully following his path, forcefully pushing through the jungle foliage, trying to step on the tree roots that he had used, but the roots just couldn’t take his weight and were crushed under his foot. It was kind of humorous, how the big guy kept getting snagged on vines and other vegetation and Turgus couldn’t help but smile.
The look on Chomper’s face however was anything but happiness or amusement.
The vegetation on this island was just much too dense for a devilsaur to lumber through.
As he waited for his friend to catch up to him, Turgus unrolled the map that had sent him to this isolated island in the first place.
The old parchment had been given to him by a crusty old Dwarf that he had met in the pub in Gadgetzan. Where he had gotten it from, or how was anyone’s guess. Maybe he was a sucker for throwing down a hundred gold pieces for it.
Well more than maybe, he was a sucker.
He couldn’t help but imagine the white bearded old dwarf sitting back counting his gold coins laughing while he is was here sweating, pushing his way through thick jungle on some God forsaken island.

Of course, if by some chance that the map was real, a hundred gold pieces was a steal.

They were on the right track so he rolled the map up and looked back to see where Chomper was. He was just was a few feet back rubbing against a tree, scratching his flank.
Finally, there was a smile on the big guys face.
After a minute of scratching Chomper stepped up next to him. He reached up and gently patted Chomper’s side, pausing just a moment before pushing through the vegetation again.
After an hour of working their way through the dense vegetation, the two of them stepped out into a large clearing, a ancient pyramid covered in vines and vegetation rising high above them.
Huge and intricately carved trolls with large gems in their eyes hinted that the ruins had not been visited or plundered.
“Ha-ha!” he yelled, “There is something here!” as he smacked Chomper’s flank. Chomper responded with a playful nudge that sent him sprawling.
Turgus quickly picked himself and with a big smile on his face, “I guess that I deserve that for making you trudge through the woods, ha-ha!”

He took a moment to take in the tremendous dimensions of the pyramid, its wonderful carvings that covered its surface, hidden a bit by the vines and vegetation, but was still a very powerful and intimidating building. The archway that leads into the pyramid was covered in gold, with beautiful images of various animal spirits.

He looked up at Chomper and gently scratched the big guys chin. He knew that the devilsaur was probably not going to like what comes next, making their way through a trap filled and probably structurally unsound ancient building.
To his surprise Chomper nudged him forward with his nose, apparently the big guy was curious about the ancient building too or maybe he was just happy to not be pushing through the jungle anymore.

Turgus walked up to the archway of the temple and stopped to read the carvings.
It had been a long time since he had read ancient troll, especially this dialect, but after a few minutes, it came back to him quickly. The gateway warned that if anyone who was not a troll that entered or if anyone tried to plunder its contents that they would be at the mercy of the spirits that inhabit the temple.
He smiled to himself, he was always proud of his heritage. “It is always a great day to be a troll.” he said. Of course, the second part would have to be seen.
He walked along the corridor running his hand along the carved walls as he read the inscriptions.
The inscriptions as well as the pictographs tell a ancient story about the rise of the civilization, and how the animal spirits empowered them, giving them dominion over the world. He followed the main corridor past several side rooms to a large main room.

The room opened up wide, its dimensions were mind boggling, it seemed as if the room was as large as the pyramid was on the outside. The top of the room was lit by light that was channeled into the room from a large opening in the roof.
Huge intricately carved giant troll statues in each corner appeared to hold up the room, while extremely detailed carving of the animal spirits dominate the side walls.
The front of the room is dominated by a large carving of a powerfully build troll warrior, wielding an elaborate long bow and a large tiger standing at his side.
Each carving was covered in brilliant precious metals and sparking gems.

The room had a dozen sarcophagi arranged in a circle directly below the opening in the ceiling bathing them in bright light. Each one was intricately carved indicating the status and importance of the one entombed inside.
Turgus carefully made his way around the room reading the inscriptions and pictographs learning more and more about the rise and fall of the powerful troll legend.
Chomper just lumbered around the room sniffing at sarcophagi, snorting in disgust.
Turgus found the resting place of the warrior in the circle of sarcophagi, it was an exceptional sarcophagi with details carved into it so intricately that it put all of the other sarcophagi to shame.
He reached out through their Spirit Link to Chomper and told him to get near the entrance to the room letting him know what he was about to do.
Chomper snorted and then lumbered over to the entrance.

Turgus leaned over the sarcophagus and then suddenly pushed the stone slab top off. It slammed onto the floor with a deafening thud sending a cloud of dust into the air. As the dust settled, Turgus scanned the room, nothing seemed to be happen.
He then looked down into the sarcophagus. The mummified remains of the warrior lay inside, he could tell at one time the trappings that the warrior had worn were incredible but they were just tattered scraps now.
Then he saw the legendary bow held in both of his hands. Turgus took a moment to look at it. It was an incredible bow, unlike anything he had ever seen before. It was intricately carved, had beautifully inlaid gold along its surface, and he could see the glowing runes cascade along its surface appearing then disappearing. Just the bows design gave no question as to the power and skill required to wield it.
After a moment, he reached down and pulled the bow out of the mummies hands. As he did so, there was a sudden sound of stone on stone grinding. Without hesitation he threw the bow over his shoulder and turned, running straight towards the entrance to the room.
As he ran he heard the slabs of the other sarcophagi slam onto the floor and deep disturbing moans rise in the room as he could only assume the mummies were coming back to life.
He didn’t look back, he just ran.

He found Chomper holding up a large stone slab with his strong back that must have been released when he grabbed the bow. Chomper’s legs were quivering with the strain, so he quickly dove under him and rolling to his feet.
“Lets go Chomper! We need to get the Hell out of here!“ He yelled as he took off down the corridor.
Chomper turned to his side shifted his shoulder just so, as he stepped to the side. The huge stone slab fell to the floor with such an incredible amount of force that it made the entire building shudder.
The big guy quickly turned and charged down the corridor quickly catching up to Turgus with his huge strides.
There was no time to lose, so Turgus called upon the Spirit of the Cheetah. The spirits power filled him and he soon was running with speed of the Cheetah. He felt the energy go through the Spirit Bond between Chomper and himself, and saw the big guy soon running with the same speed.
Segments of the floor started falling away, and several times they had to leap over large chasms as the tiles fell away.

Suddenly there was a feeling of incredible heat, so he looked over his shoulder.
A great wall of fire filled the corridor behind them and was moving quite quickly towards them.
Chomper roared and lowered his head and leaned forward, as he pushed himself to run even faster.
Turgus yelled, “Go Go GO!!“ as he too leaned forward, pushing himself and the Cheetah’s Spirit to the limit.
The golden archway was directly ahead of them beckoning them forward and out of the pyramid.

The floor suddenly fell out from underneath them. They quickly jumped trying to make it the rest of the way.
Chomper leapt first and made the jump easily. Turgus leapt too but after a moment he realized that he wasn’t going to make it, his legs didn’t have the power that his companions had.
Chomper felt his thoughts through their link and he quickly turned, his huge tail whipping towards Turgus as he fell. Turgus reached out and caught a hold of the tip of Chomper’s tail, and just barely.
Chomper took a couple steps forward pulling him up and out of the chasm.
Turgus let go of Chomper‘s tail and fell to the ground, letting out a big sigh and patted Chomper’s leg.
He turned to look out at the chasm and saw the wall of fire still advancing towards them.
“OhhHH CRAP!!” He yelled, as he scrambled to his feet. Chomper didn’t even look, he just took off running.
It was just a few strides until they were out of the pyramid, but they didn’t stop running or turn around until they were at the edge of the clearing.
The two of them then looked back at the pyramid. The entire building was engulfed in a conflagration of flames and was collapsing in on itself, little by little. They relaxed and flopped onto the ground. The soft grass-like vegetation absorbing their fall.
Turgus thanked the Spirit of the Cheetah and released its power.
Chomper let out a big Devilsaur size sigh, and started rubbing his side on the grass.
Turgus looked over at his buddy and said with a smile, “Your telling me!”
As the laid there just appreciating being alive, Turgus admired the bow for a while and then said, “Its too bad I wasn’t able to examine the temple in its entirety. I wonder what I could have learned?”
Chomper just snorted.
“Your right, ha-ha!” Turgus said as he got to his feet.
It was time to make their way back through the jungle to the beach and off of this island. They had gotten what they had come for.
Turgus looked over at Chomper and said, “How many times have you saved my bacon now?”
Chomper snorted as they made their way back into the jungle, a big grin on his face.

A ripping yarn, Matey! I liked it very much :D

Turgus sounds like a plunderer after Art's own heart. If she ever gets over Pretty Boy Duncan, she may come looking for him ...
