Suggestions for pets with a 'desert' theme.

Unread post by Talaridan »

I'm looking to plan some tames for beasties that have a strongly 'desert' feel to them.

My character, Khi'jazi, is a Sandfury troll and so I wanted her pets to have a feel that matched hers.

Currently, she has a scorpid and a 'cheetah' (Dishu), but I was looking for other ideas. :)

If this helps, here is a picture a friend of mine did of her.

Hmm, a desert theme...

Well, to pick off the bones of unprepared travelers, I'd go with a vulture or a condor.

All sorts of snakes live in the desert, so serpents might be your bag. (As well as wind serpents, if you want to add a bit of fantasy.)

Spiders lurk all over the place, so those can work as well.

Hyenas and lions are more Savannah creatures than desert, but you might be able to bend them toward a desert theme.

Tortoises are very desert-related, so a turtle is an option, too.

Hope I've helped a little!

I'm not sure on the lore for sandfury trolls. Before choose ANY pet, I recommend looking at their lore.

I know Darkspears HATE birds according to their lore so when Mel said 'get a condor', I was like "Wait!" cause I knew the darkspear trolls.

If you'd like, I can get together with my friend Daniel and see if we can find anything about pet restrictions, lore-wise. :3

Not sure what spec you're going, but you could also go out to all the desert-like zones and see what catches your eyes. There's Silithus, Tanaris, Badlands and .. the other one.. I'm drawing a blank, I'm thinking of the one with Deathwing's scar, and the one with the dark portal. Then Desolace... There's all sorts of neat pets around these zones, worms, silithid, spiders, carrion birds, wolves, cats, etc.

While hyenas and lions are typically thought of as living in the savannah, I've seen a few documentaries of desert prides/packs, so it could work (also, there's some hyenas in the desert zones, so desert hyenas are definitely a "thing" in WoW).

Troll lore nerd here.

The Sandfury worship two beastial loa. The first one, named Kimbul, is the Loa of tigers, Lord of beasts, the King of Cats and the Prey's Doom. The second is Shadra, the spider, also worshiped by forest and jungle trolls alike. This info is taken from the Tablet of Theka found in Zul'Farrak. The sandfury also worship a hydra named Gahz'rilla, but they are still untameable.

Inside Zul"Farrak we have tameable serpents and beetles.

In the sands of Tanaris we have hyenas, vultures, scorpids, and serpents, plus turtles and crabs along the shores. Silithids are also dominate in the area, but DO NOT tame one. Trolls and the Aqir have fought for centuries and the trolls never had a true victory over them so trolls, especially desert trolls, hate silithids.

Other desert like creatures would be crocs, worms, and wasps, although careful with the silithid looking wasps.

I talked to my friend. He said considering Sandfury trolls used to be Jungle Trolls at some point before they got separated, it's best to avoid ANY birds...including carrion birds. Jungle trolls have always disliked birds, because they think birds are weak and its unlikely that's changed when the Sandfury became desert trolls. So yeah.....I'd avoid any silithids or birds of any kind.

Also, Wassa, Sandfury's do not worship the spider loa, as Sandfury's were once apart of the Gurubashi tribe. Only forest trolls like Amani worship her. :)

the rest are alright though! I hope the information helps! Here's a couple of links....

The bird thing with Sandfuries would be iffy. Based on what little we know about Sandfury trolls, they got split from other jungle trolls during the Great Sundering, about 10,000 years ago. That is a long time, so views may have changed. I wouldn't say "oh ya go and tame a vulture because the Sandfury trolls are totally ok with it," but if Khi'jazi thinks this is enough time to forget old biases, and if her troll is ok with birds, she can.

Gurubashi do also worship Shadra. High Priestess Mar'li in the old version of Zul'Gurub was her avatar. Also since Shadra is mentioned on the Tablet of Theka when you were on the quest The Spider God the Sandfury once worshiped her. They might not anymore since it only appeared while on this quest, and the quest is obsolete now in Cata.

Agreeing with what Wassa said here, I love my troll lore ^_^ Jungle trolls most definitely do worship Shadra as well, her high priestess was present in ZG, and Shadra still has a temple in ZG nowadays. (Also, about how Amani worship Shadra- I don't believe that's proven anywhere as the only forest tribe known to worship Shadra is the Witherbark, which aren't even in Amani lands. So Shadra is primarily worshipped by jungle trolls and the Witherbark. And Sandfury, assuming the quest tablet is still correct.)

Inside the actual city, ZF, there are lots and lots of beetles and the sandfury shadow hunters have basilisks, so perhaps tame a croc since basilisks are untameable..(/shakefist) Also as Wassa mentioned the Sandfury worship Kimbul, a tiger loa, so tigers would be an option aswell. Scorpions, snakes, spiders, hyenas, beetles, and wasps are all present in the desert if that helps any.

Ah my mistake on that one. I remember that questline now....plus Daniel confused me. When he speaks 'Amani' he means forest trolls in general. *bonks him for confusing her*

As for the bird thing, I'd be extremely careful about it cause yeah...it was 10,000 yrs ago but the Darkspears STILL hate them. So if the hate of birds is carried that long with them, it's likely the same with the Sandfury. They don't tend to forgive and forget so easily.

You could also pick up this fox skin : http://www.wow-petopia.com/look/mistfoxskinbrown.html as it's used for the quest mob in Uldum for the Schnottz quest "The Desert Fox." And IRL, foxes do live in deserts - check out the fennec!

Thank you all for the wonderful information! You gave me a lot of options I hadn't even considered yet. :)

ANY lore (not just pet lore) is helpful. I'm looking at Wowwiki, Wowpedia, and quests that I can remember for information to help play her 'properly' as well as trying to mix in some Bedouin, Egyptian, and Tuareg traditions that I know of and can find that seem to make sense.

As for the birds, the only one I was really interested is Zaricotl:
Image

He has such a neat Egyptian feel, like the real Egyptian Vulture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_Vulture

I would adore having a Hydra. I really hope they end up an exotic tank pet personally. :D

And Tahlian, the fox idea is actually wonderful and new to me! I love Fennec!

Honestly, I see nothing wrong with having a bird for an OOC pet if it fits your theme and you really love it.

well, taking away lore and reason i think most pets with a golden coat will do the job fairly well.
other than bears, gorillas and rhinos. they just dont belong in that theme. XD

While this feature of the Grimtotem Spirit Guide wasn't exactly intended... - it will still be possible in future for everyone who wishes to tame this NPC to do so

Agreed.

And one of many doesn't mean she goes by her tribe's opinion. Depending on her personality, (rebellious, independent, open-minded and the like would be good characteristics.) she could say, "No. I will be different", disregard her tribe's superstitions, and get a bird.

I have been browsing Petopia and reading suggestions and so far here is Khi's tentative stable (planned since she's not even 60 yet!).

Image
A serpent seems to fit in really well with all trolls, and this is my favorite skin. It isn't found in Tanaris, but it is found nearby so seems suitable.

Image
I really like the skin and I love the idea of the Egyptian vulture, so I'll take a 'risk' of her being a little unusual in terms of trolls and not minding having a bird. On a similar note, Shatterspears and the Amanis of Zul'Aman both revere birds, particularly the eagle. So it does not seem too far fetched that the Sandfury might have some respect for the vultures.

Image
As her current 'cheetah' pet, since it matches the Druid traveling form. Cheetahs are more 'dry plains' than desert, I suppose but they seem to fit well into the feel I am going for.

Image
A lion seems very fitting. There are technically none 'wild', but they are Royal Guardians in Uldum, and they apparently are found there as there is a quest involving tamed ones. I like the idea of a 'desert pride' of lions as well.

Image
I love foxes and Fennec foxes in particular, so this seems a very suitable pet as well.

Image
I love hyenas and I wanted one that was a bit unique, so the red one was a natural choice.

Image
This one is more a roleplay-related pet, since Khi came across a raptor hatchling (the Leaping Hatchling pet) by chance. She is currently raising the little fellow, and I plan to have him be her pet when he's a bit older.

Image
There are desert wolves/coyotes, so this skin and model seemed to have a desert sort of feel.

Image
I much prefer the Madexx/Armored Scorpid skin, and the bronze/brown one gets so little love. Plus the colors are really very 'deserty', though I might see about camping to find a red/black one as well.

Image
Technically not a 'desert creature', but it is indeed very similar to the horned lizards and I really love the coloring.
