A little creepy?

Unread post by Tilo »

So my 20lb bombay gooba no his name's not gooba just a nickname...he's getting up there in years & has started gimping around a little bit, I know eventually he'll let me know it's his time to head on over that colorful bridge.

However, I want to get his paw prints tattooed on myself as a memorial to him, & get him cremated if I can afford it.

Keep in mind... he's doing rather well in his golden years thus far, but the fact I'm looking to get these things done before, or after he cruises on over that bridge, seems to have creeped some friends & family out. Unrelated, I have this imprinted paw print steel ring & on the inside it reads 'unconditional', it's really pretty & I love it.

Has anyone done something like this for their four legged, two legged, or slithery type pets, & have found family or friends finding your ways of coping with the inevitable or grieving; creepy?

Haven't gotten the tattoo yet, want it to be his paw prints walking though with a little bit of shadow maybe or just all black.

Either way I was just wondering ^^

I don't think it's creepy. When my first bearded dragon died (we bought a very sick one unintentionally..) the vet imprinted her handprint on a little clay tablet for us. It sits in my new bearded dragon's tank ^^ It helps having something to remember them by.

I love this idea! I have a tattoo on my back as an "in memory of" one of my monitor lizards. I will be getting my dog's paw prints done pretty soon actually.

I say go for it.

We put our very first family dog down this summer, right before my birthday in May. We had a service come to our house in order to ensure that he would be happy and comfortable before he went. While we donated his body to the local vet hospital, the service was able to make us a clay paw print just before he finally passed on. We baked it the same day and now it sits in my mom's home for us all to touch and remember whenever we visit.

Losing this dog hurts me even to this day, and I have definitely considered getting a tattoo to remember him by. I wanted an outline of his paw taken from the clay mold, and I hoped to have his name and dates of life inside the paw. My family is less than accepting of this idea, but I don't really think it's fair to criticize anyone about the way we choose to remember our pets. Pets are so acutely important in ways it's sometimes difficult to articulate and I struggle to cope with the loss of my dog all the time. If it feels like getting a tattoo and having him cremated would make losing your cat a little easier for you, I say go for it and ignore the nay-sayers. The only person who can tell you how to grieve is yourself. For what it's worth, I think a simple, beautifully done tattoo is a really tasteful reminder of a pet who has meant so much.
