no longer require drawing, thanks to all who helped

Unread post by Sukurachi »

I find myself in need of a small drawing. Something to use as the cover image on my printed manuscripts. I have a pretty good idea of what I'd like, but am always open to further suggestions.

I don't want anyone working for nothing, but I cannot afford to pay any real large sums of money.

If someone would be willing, I'd happily pay for a few Blizzard Store pets or mounts.

Let's start from the fact of what kind of drawing are you talking about. Digital, hand drawn, anything else?
(Not that my skills are in any way good in either form, but hell, someone wants to give me free stuff!)

Obviously, I prefer someone with a bit of experience/talent.
I believe there are quite a few members on this forum who do a great deal of both CG drawing and hand-drawing.

I would be happy with either one if the effect is what I want. I've seen some vector-graphic images done that were wonderful.

I am looking for something VERY "simple" in appearance.

My initial idea was very simple, either black and white, or very vivid colours.
A field of wheat/grain, and a single farmer, only his back and a wide-brimmed hat visible (he's leaning over in the field)

So "fluffy" growing stuff, with a simple, almost "suggested" human figure.
I'd like the entire "form" of the image to have a bit of a flying saucer shape. (a flat bottom, pointy edges, the middle top-side thicker where the farmer is)
This is going on cover pages of a publication (self-published... making like $0).

It will be used just above my name on the cover pages.

A pencil drawing would do if the lines are clear. An ink drawing would be better for resolution.
And a computer generated vector drawing would be best as that would be easily resizable without losing quality.
I would include, as well, a mention of the artist's name in the inside cover.

here's an image that contains THREE of the elements I require, they just need to be placed together, and in a drawing rather than a photo...

Image
The hat is great, though I'd rather it did not look TOO Asian, and the farmer bent over is perfect... I need the farmer's back to be white, barely showing above the crop. So just his back, and hat, poking out of the crop.

Again, the lines cannot be too fine, either, since this is going to a non-photo printer. It prints very good quality, but it's not designed for photos.

I could also take a stab at this. Currently I am working on designing a personal wordmark to go on my artist statements, title cards in galleries and on my promo posters. I am also working on designing a new logo for an orchestra, so I have (some) experience in creating effective, proffessional digital logos that will print good in both b&w or colour. It just depends on if I will have time or not after schoolwork. The joys of being an art student! :D

I am not an artist (well, not a visual artist... I'm a composer), but I threw together a rough idea of what I wanted using VERY basic tools I had at my disposal (paintshop "pro"... lol, what a name!).

If I post the image it might give you an idea of what I'm looking for?

what I did is in b&w, but I'd love for it to be printable in colour.

immediately below the image must appear the name "Les Éditions du Dos Blanc" (this the concave lower part of the image... I want the words to be almost "in" the image, but not quite). no one needs to include the text, I have that here in a special font.

Image

in my version, the "grass" part is just a paintbrush texture I got with the airbrush feature.
I don't mind the effect, but something more "design" that looks like a wheat field, or some sort of crop... it doesn't have to be ALL "plants", it could be suggested, with a few branches here and there (like the couple of "plants" I stuck near the farmer's head... it only needs a few near him to suggest what it is).

the important things are: the field, the farmer with a white back, and the sun hat.

those are all beautiful Acherontia.

but for my use, it's a TINY it too "complex".

Remember this is being printed on the cover of a music book, it should have a white background, as much as possible.
I also don't know if my printers can handle heavy amounts of colour shading. I think it will come out a bit blotchy.

You also have to make sure when using colour that the colours are different enough in shade to properly print black and white. Not saying yours isn't - just saying as a general point. Logos etc. Should always be created in black and white with colours the same tone added after. :]

Ahh my bad, I only read the bit with "My initial idea was very simple, either black and white, or very vivid colours. " I didn't realize it had to be able to be printed in B&W as well as colors >.<

Is there a time limit? I have a few sketches done and would like to present a vector version, but I won't be able to until I get my new pc. I should have it within the next two weeks with any luck.

no time limit :)

I am in the process of standardizing my musical scores.
I want ALL of my printed music to have the same logo, the same layout, everything.

Until now, I'd been using a very simple graphic: a letter B within a letter D, in a weird font (the "company" name is DosBlanc).

But I really want to go with something more evocative... thus the farmer with the "white back" (a "dos blanc" in french).

The reason for the "white back" is the farmers in the region where I was born used to wear sheepskin coats to work in the fields, and from the road all you would see was their white backs. Thus anyone from the region was called "un dos blanc".

wow!
that is beautiful.

can I be fussy?

any way of having the farmer be a tiny bit more "hunched" over, as if he was working a bit closer to the ground?
by that I mean that I'd like to get the impression of his back being a bit more prominent.. more, head down, back up? I don't want him to look as though he is standing up.

and... more fussy!

any way to have the bottom of the image be flatter? (ie: more horizontal)
I have to incorporate the name into the bottom part, and would like to avoid "bending" the text around a curve.

LOVE the colours, totally.
and it looks awesome in B&W.

Sure. I like it when people are fussy it lets me know what they want better. I'll give it a try and post it up here when it's done. :)

How is this? If you want to go with this one,but still need some changes that's cool too. Also I don't know if you just don't like curved text or don't want to do it since it is a pain in the butt, but if you need text on it I could probably do that too depending on if you have a specific font in mind or what not. :)

awesome, looks great.

yeah, I have a very specific font for the text. it's a slightly odd-looking font: Bard.

the line of text is relatively long, it should read: - Les Éditions du Dos Blanc - (with the "long" dashes at each end, not the short minus signs I used here).
