Tenacity: Worth it?

Unread post by Narasalu »

Ok, I could do with some advice here. ;)

I've got to Outland on my Marksman spec Petopian hunter, and since level 10, i've used my cynical but brilliant worg Albert, and recently picked up a nifty little moth from Azuremyst. Now I love both of them to bits, but since I got to Outland, i've found that neither of them can keep proper aggro unless I stay permanently in Viper, and use only Auto Shot.

This is getting pretty annoying, so I decided that I may as well get a tenacity pet for leveling. Problem is, i've never tamed one before and actually used it, so i'm not sure if they could actually solve my problem or not. :(

So, if anyone has any experience with Tenacity leveling, i'd love to get some advice. :D

I'd definitely vouch for a Tenacity being a great solo-levelling companion. Ferocity pets may do more damage and sometimes burn down mobs faster, but overall you're going to have a much easier time using a Tenacity.

If you're not picky about looks and only want function I'd recommend a turtle. Those things are tanks and can take quite a beating before giving up.

Cunning... why does everyone forget about cunning pets? I went 10-80 with only a cunning pet, an owl actually. He served me well. So well in fact, that I'd do it all over again. lol

Since you are in Outlands I would recommend a warp stalker as they should be right at your level. I'm very impatient when grinding and can't simply waiting for my pet to dash/charge to it's enemy. Takes too long, hehe! With warp my warp stalker usually always gets the first hit before my arrow does and that helps with threat.

However as marks you probably will always pull aggro off your pet. Duel spec to BM if you find it too much of a problem.

Well, i've decided to take the plunge and go tame a bear, as they are the only easily grabbable tenacity pets around my level.

I'll see how it works out. Thanks all! :D

Sheldon respectfully disagrees - he is a very handsome turtle, indeed. :D

Haha, I suppose that didn't come out the way I meant it to. x) I adore turtles, I think they're adorable, but I know a lot of people don't care for them. I meant it more as a 'if you don't care what sort of pet you have' a turtle is probably the best.

Well I went from lv 12 to 60 only using my wolf I got outside stormwind. Never had a problem with him holding the aggro. Course I spec BM.

To the question of a Tenacity pet or not, I'd ask what your end-game intentions are. Do you plan on raiding, or questing/heroics and so forth?
If you are aiming towards raiding the end-game raids, I'd suggest against a Tenacity pet as learning to deal with aggro when it's on you (both intentionally and accidentally) is a very valuable skill and one which you will need for ICC raiding, and one which you will not learn if you lean on your pet for the sake of convenience.

If you don't have raiding aspirations, for sure pick up a Tenacity pet, as they are great questing tanks and, if used properly with a good BM spec, you can off-tank heroics, solo heroics and all sorts of other fun stuff like that.

Basically, look ahead at what skills you think you will need to develop and plan accordingly!

I find my little tank to be very reliable when I am questing alone. Since I love the DoT shot, my Serpent Sting and my tank's poison is more than enough to waste an enemy. He's been very useful at times when I've had to pull more than one enemy either because I have to slay them or grab items.

One of the main comments made by Nara is being specced as a marksman. I have found for myself by that level, that my pets, even the tenecity pets can't seem to hold the aggro to a mob. Even if the pet is the same level as me, I aggro the mob quite quickly.

I have found though with a pet that is the same level as me, will hold the mob long enough that when they come after me, I can down them in the next 3 shots. I save my conclusive shot for this. That way most of the time I kill them before they get to me. Now that does not take in consideration if you are pulling multiples at one time. I have to use feign death to get the mob back off and sit for a few seconds to give my pet a chance to generate and hold the aggro again for the next few shots.

If there is more than 3 in the mob, then like you said, I tone down the shots, doing a slow kill till the group drops down to 3 and then rev up with quick kills.

But like you, as a marksman... My pets can't hold the aggro through the whole fight. My tenecity pet is the bear, but my favorite pet is my Raptor.

Having a Tenacity pet is definitely worth it - soloing is SO much easier. I just MD my Rhino and send him into mobs, mend pet and we're good to go. I haven't tried to tank a heroic with him, but he has main tanked regulars with a lot of success. I <3 Floyd.

This is mainly what I was wondering. I have leveled up several hunters, but all of those were BM, so for leveling at least i'm pretty inexperienced with MM. :(

Piran the bear has the staying power that I haven't seen in my Ferocity or Cunning pets, but the threat is still an issue. I've resigned myself to that now though, and although I did expect it, it didn't think it would be this bad.

Still don't know what i'll do, for now and for at 80.

What you do is just keep your aggro in check and fake death when ever its getting too high works for me and my 80 hunter. As a MM hunter i useally can burn the mobs down pretty quick so that helps.

I like being a marksman, and for me I got use to the fact I was going to be pulling the mob off of my pet. Most of the time, my pet (of any tree) holds the mob long enough that by the time it turns on me, I can kill it before it totally reaches me (this is a one on one situation). So you need to plan you battles well. Don't gather more than 2 or 3 mobs at a time. Send your pet in first and give him a second or two to generate threat before you start shooting. Lay down your traps to slow any mobs that you pull off. Feign death to put them back on your pet. Then pewpewpew kill them as fast as you can :-)

Foru21dr pretty much has the long and short of it. Make sure you give your pet a growl or two, and then unload. Take thunderstomp, period, then end. And guard dog. Then make sure you mark, sting, chimera, arcane, aimed, and if it isn't dead, steady. Simple, no muss, no fuss, and you should have a corpse. If you are going to AoE then that's a bit more complicated.

I can't remember what level you get Misdirection, but it is a huge help when pulling groups. I toss that on Sheldon with a pre-emptive Mend Pet, then off he goes into the heat of battle! I very rarely pull off of him with a combination of MD + Thunderstomp. Though, I am Beast Mastery. But even in your case as a Marksman, your Volley is probably a lot stronger than mine so the group would die faster anyway. :)
