Prometheus Ponderings - SPOILERS

Unread post by Worba »

I started this topic because the previous one was more of a "I'm thinking of seeing the movie, is it good?" kind of premise; this here is for people who've seen it and are still trying to make sense of it. E.g. THAR BE SPOILERS AHEAD, so if you haven't seen it yet, stop here.

Ok, so here are my initial thoughts in no particular order, I encourage anyone else so inclined to post their own or give their own spin on things.

Overall, I liked it, and in particular something I've been waiting for ever since I saw the alien ship scene back in Alien I - while I liked all of A1 I was definitely a little sad to see that ship and its secrets left behind when the characters returned to their own ship, so it was nice to revisit that and delve into it more.

As far as I could tell the glop in the research lab was designed to allow one to quickly propagate themself as a species, e.g. the alien who drank it in the beginning was sacrificing himself to kind of kickstart the human race - the glop basically disintegrated his body and then spread it through the waterways of the area to (presumably) fuse with local creatures and cause their DNA to switch over to the aliens' template, over some period of time... which is why we look like them and not apes.

We also know that something went wrong (apparently they did further research on the glop and it ... turned) and they since changed their minds, coming to hate us or at least desire our imminent destruction, and which was deliberately left for the next movie to explain why.

David (android). I liked him. As far as I could tell his actions were driven by a sense that having been artificially created, the power of creation is something he therefore reveres, and so the chance to create life (and thereby become godlike in a sense) using the alien glop was a temptation too great for him to resist. I just wish they could have done something to make his motives more certain and less about guessing.

Also I REALLY would like to know exactly what he said to the engineer... >.>

Meredith Vickers (Mission Director). Basically the only character with real common sense, I thought she was well done except that despite her bossiness and suggested powers of command, she never actually did any leading or even gave the sense of being able to do so - it was like Ridley Scott would forget her for a while and then have her make some vague manager-like noises only to be casually ignored and disappear once more. Her one pivotal act was to torch the infected archaeologist, which was great as a scene but it did nothing to help establish her creds as a leader - would have been better if she'd ordered someone else to do it, they freeze up, and so THEN maybe she grabs the flame thrower and does her thing.

Also when running from a giant rolling donut most people would move to the side rather than trying to outrun it... that was almost like something out of Looney Tunes... >.>

Elizabeth Shaw (Ripley 2). I liked her in Girl With a Dragon Tattoo, and I thought she was a great successor to Sigourney Weaver's character, particularly the youngest version in Alien I. Or at least I had that sense - the problem was that outside of that one VERY intense scene in the robot ER machine, and her quick encounter with the engineer at the end (would have liked to see her lead it back to the sick bay not just be lucky enough to be right there when it attacked her), she didn't really have the chance to do much of that think-fast-and-outrun-the-critter vibe that Ripley was famous for. But that one scene did go a long way - yeesh!

BTW I was wondering why was the robot ER programmed for male anatomy when it was the property of Meredith Vickers... but on reflection I think that's because it was actually for her father.

Charlie Holloway (Shaw's BF). Did not find him convincing. I could see him as an intern maybe, but he was just too slick and unfocused to be someone a trillion dollar mission was (partly) based around. Archaeologists approach their work with much more care - everything they do goes into the papers they make their name with, and one wrong move can be all it takes to make people not take their work seriously. And they're no stranger to biohazards and quarantines and general safety precautions - the crap they deal with in actual tombs can be very deadly to the body. So him taking his helmet off didn't seem likely. He would have been documenting like crazy, and moving at a snail's pace.

Rafe & Sean aka Beavis & Butthead. Can someone explain how is it that they left the research complex first, but when the storm hit, everyone else BUT them got back to the ship. What, did they get lost or something? That didn't make sense. But now and then they had good moments. Like, initially on discovering their predicament, they are scared and want to get away from the red blips on the holo-map - good. But where do they retreat to? The room everyone originally fled from with the squiggly things on the ceiling and now-overflowing jars of alien glop puddling all over the floor. I mean they're putting down their sleeping bags in and amongst these things. Really? Not setting off their squick-sensors even a little?

And then Sean gets turned into a zombie. We already have to accept predators, now zombies too?

Captain & flight crew. A little too willing to embrace Shaw's assumption that the alien was headed back to earth as opposed to just trying to get the hell off that planet & go home, and to gleefully commit suicide. Usually people in that predicament, faced with a sudden speculation from someone else, will tend to doubt and question if only because the truth is too horrible to directly contemplate.

But again, I did like the movie as a whole - the sets and Alien tech were incredibly cool, I thought they did a great job of staying true to Giger's original concepts while also expanding them and building on them. The engineer was cool as well - usually when they use human-looking-aliens in movies it sucks, but this was a rare exception to that rule. I think it helped that while the humans (or at least their android) learned to emulate the engineers somewhat, the engineer survivor was just a cold, menacing MF who did not interact with the humans other than to smush them.

It's just hard to really empathize with the characters when basically all the trouble stemmed from what I consider really stupid-bordering-on-suicidal behavior e.g. humm think I'll go check out those inhuman roars and groans and creepy lights in the basement armed with a flashlight and toilet plunger! :P

But yeah, cool flick and I'll definitely be watching the next one.

what David said to the Engineer: "Excuse me sir, I am not satisfied with how my head is attached to my body. Could you do something about it, please? Oh, and that's my boss... would you mind taking care of him as well, while you're at it?"

I don't think he was a zombie more of he was mutating as it does not show him really dieing just falling into the glop. Or that's what I remember haha

I think the Space jockeys saw us as a failed experiment and what you do with failed experiments is destroy them .

Have to say the DNA scene was a bit stupid as if our DNA was 100% the same why don't we look just like them? As in giant albino black eyed guys. But that is just me being a bio nerd

You'd think the company would of brought some armed military guys along with them even if it was for science your meeting the so called "gods" that may or may not be nice. I would of I mean that's a lot of cash to spend on something that could fail really bad

I still think the Jockeys worshiped or used Xenomorphs as Bioweps or tried to make their own ones. I mean there is one painted in that room with the giant head in it and the other painting had what looked like a Jockey who exploded or something. That's what I think anyway as this movie is set 30 odd years before the first Alien and the Jockey in that one was way dead :S

I just wish they could have done something to make his motives more certain and less about guessing.

At this point, David was told by his father the "Try harder" in regards to finding out more about the aliens/creators/what eva. It was only after the event of him spiking Charlie Holloway's drink, was he informed about the malfunctioned probe that thought it found a life form (which the went to investgate by himself) did he even find a "live" engineer. My presumption was he was just looking for a result from the only thing he had so far found, in order to "try harder" which his father asked him to do.

Also I REALLY would like to know exactly what he said to the engineer... >.>

So, do you like linux too?

She was looking out for her inheritance. She clearly hated her dad, did not care so much for mission, and to be frank, just wanted dad to die, gtf out of there and go home. She may have been in control of the mission, but only becuase her father wished her to be, and he knew she would do anything to make it happen so she could still be in his will. Did she want to be the leader, dout it... was she made of leader material... maybe?... Did she want her inheritance? Definitely enough to make her give it a go.

Also when running from a giant rolling donut most people would move to the side rather than trying to outrun it... that was almost like something out of Looney Tunes... >.>

I actually wanted to see/hear a little bit more of a "pop" when Meredith Vickers got steamrolled. I found that a little anticlimactic.

I quite liked that you really got so see her come from a "I'm a nerdy, idealistic archeologist" to a "I will fight beyond the limits of any human being for what I belive in". The shit she went throug in the end, physically and emotionally where so extreme, most people would have just rolled over and died, but she just... kept... going. I had to give her props.

BTW I was wondering why was the robot ER programmed for male anatomy when it was the property of Meredith Vickers... but on reflection I think that's because it was actually for her father.

I think that's because it was actually for her father, agreed.

He may have been an Archaeologists per say, but he was in it for her. He loved her beyond the job. In the beginning, she was digging and found the tomb, not him. She was barren and could not have children, he did not care and loved her regardless, he took of his helm to "show off" to her (she told him off but she liked the fact he did it, and loved the fact she like it) He suicided to the flame because he cared for her safety over his own. I wish he was a little deeper, but I also just guessed she was the brains and believer, and he was sexy and supportive one. I know my partner is more knowledgeable and book smarter than I am, but I also know that I'm more creative and emotionally intelligent. I don't think that either of us are better than the other, but we compliment dam well.

"What, did they get lost or something?" Yeps, they did, the storm started to screw with the transmissions and what not. they did end up stumbling back on the room they started in, but then they had no idea that it was a "bad room" per say. The Ooze was definitely a sign that something had/was changing, but hell, everything was alien to them in that place and it may have simply been the fact that they had been there before, it gave them a little comfort due to familiarity. That and they might have guessed when the storm was over their friends would return to the same spot (which they did >.<)

Those things there were the worms (which you saw at their feet when they fist entered the tomb) that had then been infected by the Ooze. Those worms where just little worms anymore, they had mutated into Xenoworms (mixed with the alien DNA) Hence the new big ass nasty worms had a mixed DNA. They shared the "acid" blood of the xenomorphs we already knew and even the programing to try and get into the host (as one ran down his throat)

Why did the sensors not pick up the "little uninfected" worms the 1st time, not sure, but I'm not sure they were around the 2nd time they returned to the room.

And then Sean gets turned into a zombie. We already have to accept predators, now zombies too?

What happened to the worms and Charlie (infected by the aliean DNA) happend to sean also when his mask was melted by the worms acid blood and he when face 1st into the ooze. His body began to change/adapt with alien DNA. So he was not quite a zombie, just in transit of become completely infected by the virus. Charlie was similar, just not quite as fully virus blow and had enough witts to get himself flamed.

The captain had seen the virus, he knew how bad it was as the effected Sean took out 1/2 his docking bay, and he was only 1/2 gone. He found the "ship" inside the complex, he saw, via Elizabeth video feed the thousands of vials of the ooze on the engineers ship. He knew the engineers where aggressive and ganked the party when they woke him up. The only choice he needed to believe was that it was going to earth. of all the people on the mission, Elizabeth was the only one who did not lie, kill or do anything dodgy. The complex was clearly opening up and the ship was gonna come out and she was screaming that it was headed to earth, tricky decision indeed.

But yeah, cool flick and I'll definitely be watching the next one.

I really liked the movie in general too, and can't wait for the next one either :)

I suppose they could view us as failed experiments. I just have a hunch that David's stint as "ambassador" may have had something to do with it (which makes you wonder if he's going to be that helpful to Shaw in the next movie - bringing him to the engineer home world seems like deciding to group regularly with the healer who just face-wiped your last raid)...

And the (lack of) military guys - yeah, exactly. They all went in there like a bunch of kids on a school field trip - no protocol, no biohazard precautions, no documenting. How the heck did Ms Vickers ever intend to enforce her rules lol.

I guess. I think it might have been more effective if sometime in advance, they could have cracked part of a journal or ship's log confirming this stuff was indeed intended for Earth, so that by the time the ship took off, it wouldn't be a matter of guesswork plus they'd have had some time to accept it. Even then, I have a hard time believing all 3 flight crew would go along with it so glibly. E.g. a few more moist eyes and shaky hands pl0x. :)

apparently, there is an intimate link with some christian symbolism in the film as well.

notice that there are 5 (if I recall correctly) clear and focused shots of her crucifix.
the events of the film all happen on Christmas eve and Christmas day.

Whatever happened to the Engineers on that base, happened... 2000 years ago.

Notice that Shaw doesn't have "an abortion". She has a C-section.
Shaw was infertile, yet.. she gave birth (virgin birth).
her husband was not, technically, the father of their "child".

much of the film's dialog turns around the question of faith... often simply as to faith in that there were Engineers, but still, it's "faith".

anyway, there is SO much going on in the film with symbolism and allegory, it's almost worth seeing it a couple more times to get more info down.

There's also a time period of about 33 millennia between A) the "couple hundred years range" back 35,000 years ago when engineers appeared in various ancient artwork across the world*, and B) 2,000 years ago when the engineer biolab went kerplooey.

Personally I'm thinking that humans are designed to spread and "tame" planets either for engineer habitation or so engineers can more easily extract their resources and ship them back home. E.g. to them we're essentially trained lab rats, insignificant.

So I suspect they spent those intervening 33k years searching for - and seeding - other worlds. With humans, or something similar.

And when the engineer is awoken, my suspicion is that David, with a beatific expression, said something like "Here we are O Creator, to tell you that your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries". Remember at one point he said to Shaw in sotto voce, "Doesn't every child want to kill its parents?", e.g. humans-as-a-whole are David's parents, and the best way he can think of to do them in is to get the engineer to do it for him by pissing him off...

Either that or the engineer just felt that our development of space travel had made us too powerful to be controlled as servitors.

the deconstruction wasn't quite that.
it's that Jesus was an "emissary" of sorts sent by the Engineers.
and Ridley Scott HAS alluded to this in various interviews.

Re: Prometheus Ponderings - SPOILERS

What I would have preferred to happen in Prometheus:

Based on the prior Aliens movies, characters either approach these situations prepared (a la Aliens 2), where they had an armored platoon of USMC, or else because they're tossed into it, a la Alien 1, where the characters were essentially just the crew of a spacefaring cargo ship responding to what (they thought) was a distress beacon, which they were required to do and probably had very little training for. Either one works - the issue I had with Prometheus is that you've got characters who go into it ostensibly prepared, and yet seem to stumble along like tourists.

Because they are on a trillion dollar mission for Weyland-Yutani, they definitely would be going in prepared (at least for an archaeological dig if nothing else), and yet I also would like to keep the characters essentially the same if possible. So the first thing I'd have done is change Elizabeth Shaw's and Charlie Holloway's roles - in my version they are reporters for the Associated Press; Shaw has a minor background in archaeology which she's leveraged into a very successful career covering digs worldwide.

Charlie is equally famous as a reporter on human interest stories, and so through him we get to see a few interviews of the various crew, that help flesh out their characters more, while allowing Charlie to remain essentially the same hard driving / fast paced / animated / "broad picture" fellow we see in the actual movie, but in a role that doesn't require him to simultaneously be this world famous detail-oriented archaeologist that he's clearly not.

Meanwhile everyone tends to act up a bit in front of the reporters when the camera's running, offering more chances for hasty actions...

And I'd have Meredith play a somewhat more central role, and include a private security team to ensure her orders carry some weight - not like a marine platoon but more than just 1-2 guys with pistols. -.-

The new archaeologists can then be a couple of people we don't need to relate to so closely; I'd prefer they be professional rivals so the possibility exists for hasty actions as they try to discredit / one-up eachother and take the spotlight for such a monumental discovery. Charlie also might get into cahoots with one of them on similar grounds, wanting to be the reporter who broke that story, while Shaw sides with the more scientific / thorough archaeologist.

And the initial approach would be the sort of boring, methodical one you'd expect, e.g. go in slow, bagging n tagging every foot along the way - the only initial deep exploration would be done by a robot, which would see some intriguing hints and then go suddenly offline. But then the above tensions start to ignite, perhaps Charlie and the more ambitious archaeologist sneak in to get first look at something, or maybe one of the more junior crew members filches some alien artifacts to sell on the black market back home, etc.

And things go downhill from there. ;)

What I think *might* happen in Prometheus II (obsessed, me? :P):

Elizabeth Shaw spends a while in cryosleep, during which time David's head is propped up on the control console with all kinds of wires feeding into his neck opening and connecting him to the ship's computer / onboard systems. During this time he comes to learn a great deal about the engineers from the ship's database. He also takes control of some robotic appendages built into the ship, and uses them to repair and reattach to his body (remember, Shaw lugged it out of the lab along with his head - that was the body she was lowering on a rope iirc), so that he is "back to his old self".

He awakens Shaw a few months before arrival at the engineers' home system (and also some time after the date Aliens IV happened) and gives her a crash course on a few basic details including simple language training, and (just) enough background to pique the interest but otherwise pretends he wasn't able to learn more, claiming the ship's database was mostly devoted to DNA glop research (when in fact he learned a great deal more but is keeping it to himself).

On arrival, Shaw discovers the engineer's planet has been taken over by (drumroll)... humans. We learn humans are a "lesser version" of engineers whose purpose is to prep viable planets for later engineer use, and also to serve more directly as servitors, laborers etc. Well turns out the engineers' cruelty caused uprisings, which were put down but would crop up again later / elsewhere, until finally the humans figured out how to use the engineer biotech and virtually eradicated the engineers.

Ofc, these humans are not very nice individuals - after all they had a rather crappy upbringing and so cruelty and harshness are all they know. They soon become a threat and Shaw flees... ending up with the last few surviving engineer refugees.

David however remains with the humans and tells them about earth, and how it would be ripe for the taking. So, Shaw now must enlist the engineer refugees' aid in preventing an earth invasion (or in attempting to prevent it anyway...).

Meanwhile ofc the biotech goes haywire like always, and you've got various gribblies scuttling about and pegging the squick-o-meter.

That's the loose framework I had in mind anyway. Will be interesting to see if any of that actually happens... :)

So I figured I'd give my overheated imagination a break from Prometheus and play some Diablo...

... BUT I CANNOT GET AWAY :P

I've decided that I'm driving back into town this week to see Prometheus again.. but this time, in 2D.
I think I missed a lot of stuff simply because the 3D at the theatre I was at just wasn't good. Either I bad glasses, or the projector was badly set up.
