Phasing for Portent

How do you know if you're phased in Vale with regards to tracking Portent? I've done all the intro quests and all that's left are dailies. Last night I found tracks but they stopped in the middle of his path and I never picked them up again. I retraced my steps to see if he just turned around mid path but I couldn't find anything. I tracked his entire path on Beta without doing any quests at all, I jumped over the wall, and I never had a phasing issue.

There was another hunter in the area looking for him but I know he didn't tame him as the tracks were appearing right in front of me when they just stopped and no amount of flaring would make him appear. I'm puzzled!

After I did all of the quests and unlocked the dailies Ive never had a phasing problem. Maybe someone else tamed him and you missed it.

Before doing all of the Vale quests, Portent would vanish as he entered the Emperor's Approach--I had one flared out and marked so I could watch him as I rehomed him, and he simply disappeared...with a fresh mark, mind you, so it's not that it expired! The hunter I called in was in a different phase from me (while sitting on top of me, in a different spot but still in Emperor's Approach), and he was able to see Portent's tracks and flare him out just fine. I haven't tracked Portent that far again since finishing Vale quests (including today's dailies), but I'll update this if I do.

I can confirm this phasing issue. I hit 90, found Hexapos and hearthed to Vale to find portent. I found his tracks and sure enough it phased as it entered Emperor's Approach. I even noticed herbs and other things phasing that I could see from 10 feet away but that would fade out as I entered the Approach. I went ahead and did the quests that open up the dailies in Vale and then circled back around. This time the Approach was all different from the new phase and sure enough I found his tracks and followed without a phasing issue. Great pet - definitely required to do the opening quest chains in vale unless you get lucky and catch him before he enters the approach.

Almost his entire western path, except for a small bit here and there, is phased--starting roughly at the trees just after where Sahn Tidehunter spawns. If you haven't done Vale quests, your best bet is to check the eastern half until you see tracks.

With all the phasing, I can't even loot the Hallow's End candy bucket in VEB.
