An Ode to Sunwing, not really

Unread post by pop »

Even though we already have a rant thread, I think Sunwing (or Ashwings as I would call it), given to its current status, deserves its own thread due to its overwhelming popularity.

I want to say that I am really grateful that Blizzard will implement new skins in patch 5.1, which would include the grey dragonhawk and the black dragonHawk. I think this is a step in the right direction because the implementation would not just gives an opportunity for hunters to gain access to certain family skills that currently requires the hunter to go into a specific zone, but it also will help other toons to level up by giving them extra green gears and xp.

Having said, I think a lot of hunters had expressed their disappointment of the omission of the armoured dragonhawk skin, which was previously intended for Sunwing. I really love the black dragonhawk skin, and I think a lot of hunter feels the same way too. Thus, in my humble opinion, that the armored dragonhawk should be made available via a normal mob instead of a rare mob. I think there are a few Outland Dragonhawks that shares the same colouration with each other and Blizz should use at least one of the non rare mob in Outland to use the armored skin. Here's a novel idea, the Crystalsong Forest would make a great place to place a small flock of feral Armored Dragonhawk :). Making a popular skin more accessible would mean that a lot of people who has fallen in love with the armored dragonhawk would get what they want XD.

I don't mind the grey and black dragonhawk skin to stay elusive and rare as in the spirit of MOP, most of the rares are only different coloured skins of the normal mobs anyway. As for the ghostly blue gemmed owl, why not make it one of the colours available for the ghostly gemmed owl in Stonetalon?
I do hope I make some sort of sense here lol

same but i still would like it to be a rare. It just gives you a whole other feeling of glee when you finaly get it.
I dont mind the new skin for sunwing at all. its pretty. But so is the armor one and i still want it.
It could easily be put in as a rare in outland or maybe even the BE zones.

Crystalsong is lacking mobs! Its such a shame cause its so nice there.
It could be the home of the armored DH yes. but wouldnt be quite as exiting. Still wouldnt say no though. I think bright colored nether-rays fit in there quite nicely myself.
A white Dragon Hawk would be perfect there!

While this feature of the Grimtotem Spirit Guide wasn't exactly intended... - it will still be possible in future for everyone who wishes to tame this NPC to do so

The armored sunwing skin was what made me conside taming a dragonhawk at all. Not because I qould use it, just because it's pretty.
Oh well, one slot less taken by an unused pretty pet... :P

As I am not a fan of most of the black skins of anything (like the netherdrakes, cloud serpents, cats, etc.), I am very disappointed they changed Sunwing. That black skin is ugly to me. My Dragonhawk is of the violet variety but I was thinking of switching good old Smaug to the armored Sunwing look. Now that dream is gone. The only black skins I like are the Raptors and Devilsaurs and I love my first flying mount, the Ebon Gryphon.

I actually dont really care for the black, just my personal taste really. The one rare I was so excited for was Sunwing with his armored look, it was the one skin I was dying to have and have been ever since I started playing in wrath and I saw that skin.

I mean I am happy for those who wanted the black but I guess I just am sad because I really wanted that skin. I wish they could just make a new rare with the black skin and give sunwing back his armor. In my view he doesnt fit his name at all and its wierd to me. If they cant give a new rare I wish they put the black skin on Manas, give sunwing back his armor and maybe just put the grey skin on other dragonhawks. More people seemed excited about the armor skin and black skin, I know maybe a few liked grey but this way the majority of people would be happy.

There are Sunreaver Dragonhawks in Crystalsong. He could be reintroduced as a rare there.

I loved the armor one. Looks like my Kemikaze is staying golden. For me, my dragonhawk is my must used pet. So I was really looking forward to this :(.

It could be, that except for a few exceptions, Blizz is just generally trying to stay away from armored pets. (And the armored pets that do exist make sense to have armor. IE wolves tamed by orcs or raptors tamed by trolls.) Yes, it's a nice skin, although just meandering in the wild doesn't make sense. Whether or not Blizz will choose to reskin it to a mob that does make sense is another story. At best, using the logic of creatures tamed by humanoids and given armor, you could use this guy or this guy. Unfortunately, both are fairly unique skins--replacing the first would leave the only other skin in Tempest Keep, replacing the second means a trip to Zul'Aman no matter what you do.

Um... we have armored pigs that are rares that we can tame, and corehounds have a type of armor and chains so its not really that big of a stretch. And none of the pigs or corehounds have a saddle the same as that dragonhawk so really its not a mount type but could have been more of a war creature that had armor put on it and it escaped or something.

Hence why I think either making a flock of the Dragonhawks in Tempest Keep to be tamable armoured mobs or maybe Blizzard can introduce new 'feral' armored dragonhawk in Crystalsong Forest. I can imagine that Feral Armoured Dragonhawks like the Mustangs of the old west. The Armoured Dragonhawk can be remnants of the old Blood Elf army led by Lady Lanathal that had fallen during the Third War.

Pigs are tamed by Quilboar, corehound tamed as demonic creatures. My argument still stands. I'm not saying mount, I'm saying armored creature. Which points out to be some sort of previously domesticated creature. And thereby typically belonging to a different faction--etc, etc. Whatever. Either way, all armored creatures that are tamable have obviously been tamed and domesticated by another group of people. Meaning if they are, in fact, putting it in as a replacement skin, they would technically have two options, following my pattern.

If, however, they choose to create a new mob, there are an infinite number of places to put it--as long as they're near some sort of obvious domesticating group of people.

I dont really understand your arguement at all really.. when has blizzard ever done "conventional" they threw that out when they gave us 140+ rares at once.. lol

/sighs

My argument isn't hard. I'm not saying Sunwing should be gone. What I'm saying is previously Sunwing was not in a logical place. He was not near any sort of logical human settlement.

The previous points is that every single armored pet has had close ties to some sort of humanoid faction. Wolves--orcs. Raptors--trolls. Boars--Quillboar. Corehounds--demons. So what I'm saying is that logically, Sunwing should be brought back as either a replacement for the two skins above, which are both close to humanoid settlements (elf and troll respectively) or created a new mob close to another humanoid area, IE Silvermoon City or Ghostlands (a la Dragon Riders of Pern style. Them dragonhawks be cleaning up corruption!) or something like that.

Your point, Blizz does nothing conventional by giving us X amount of rares has little to do with the logic of my point--this mob did not make sense where it was, I see why it was changed, it should be moved to a different place.

I think the armored Dragonhawk would make sense maybe even in Northrend if not in Eversong since those are the huge dragonhawk places.

Would it be better fit in ghostlands prolly but im not going to be picky about placement lol but hey its a mount for characters to so you guys know those times when you mysteriously dismounted and fell to your death? yah..

but you could say the whole calling a black dragonhawk sunwing is wierd as heck and makes no sense either, atleast his skin fit before now it doesnt at all. Id rather it be just oddly placed then weirdly named..

Eh...as for the name, I've been looking at Sunwing's old model for a bit. The name sun implies bright colors. Nope, that dragonhawk was black and dark red. And a sort of darkish golden tan. Sunwing isn't a logical name at all. Maybe Ashwing. Or Duskwing. Or something of the sorts. But Sunwing? Not really. So on both parts, the name isn't really logical.

But yes, the best compromise would be probably Ghostlands. Close to humanoid settlement, colors blend in and match, fitting area for a dragonhawk. Probably could have used a rename anyways, as I still don't see the whole Sunwing part.
