I am really sorry, but whenever someone asks that i cant help but direct them to this link about the best pet
However, the short version is this:
All tanacity pets do the same damage, all Ferocity pets do the same damage, all cunning pets do the same damage, the only really difference is the buff. So, which buff provides the best utility/benefit for YOU (each individual hunter) is the one to bring. The main petopia site has a page dedicated to pet abilities here.
However, there is no "ONE" pet that is "The Best pet" since there are so many factors that play into everything, from situation, location, playstyle etc.

However, for me, I prefer to use my Silithid Zolkalter Imagenot because it is the best for me, but because I enjoy webbing my opponents, and sending a giant red angry ant at them to tear their faces apart.

I prefer the Spirit Beast because of it's healing ability, especially now that the bloodthirsty pet talent is gone. I have Spirit Mend macroed to cast on me but I also leave it on auto-cast when I do BG's and then the pet will sometimes heal itself or me automatically. I have also specced into Exhilaration for the instant 30% heal to me and 100% to the pet. I can do much more damage in BG's as BM than as any other spec so that's how I have always done it. The Mastery buff they give which equals 10% more pet damage is also very good. I'm admittedly not good in PvP and have never and will never do Arenas so I need all the help I can get from a strong Ferocity pet.

I tend to love my Spirit Beast or Spider for heals and webbing.

Overall hun...there is no 'best pet'. Just a matter of what you like.

Your spirit beast shouldn't be doing less damage than any other pet you're using as BM. Survival hunters don't rely on their pets as much, so naturally, the hunter does a greater proportion of the damage than his pet.

I still swear by my spider for PvP when I'm not BM. There are plenty of opportunities for other pets to shine in PvP, though; it comes down to playstyle choices.

I'm a sworn BM, and I use a spirit beast (which has, by the way, became my pet-for-everything) for the same reasons Danielfboone mentioned. I also keep him at Ferocity for the instant ress, that I find more useful than all of the cunning-specific abilities together. Watching someone being able to -finally- bring my dear Otso down, just to get a big LOL-NOPE before getting finished off can really be heath-breaking :P

Oh yeah, Heart of the Phoenix (insta pet rez) is invaluable. It's why all of my pets get specced as Ferocity.

I have a few different pets I enjoy using, and with talent switches at a simple click, they're way more flexible.

My favorites: Spider, Silithid, Spirit Beast, Nether Rays, and Porcupines. I also occasionally have my waterstrider (Srsly... WaterWalk is invaluable sometimes) or Shale Spider, but usually it's that above list.

If you're running arenas and trying to go for rating/titles, the only choices really are a Spirit Beast or a Crane. The Spirit Beast's heals are invaluable, especially when coupled with the Glyph of Stampede. As for the Crane, the 4 second CC actually doesn't DR with any of our other abilities and can be used to continue a CC chain or to get a trap off on the healer as many healers anticipate a trap after a Scatter Shot but many aren't as familiar with the Crane's Lullaby. Plus, Scatter Shot's visual effect is much more noticeable than that of Lullaby. If you Scatter Shot the healer, almost all warriors will Safeguard their healer and take the trap but then that opens up the opportunity of a trap off Lullaby as the warrior's Safeguard is on cooldown.

As for pets to be used during Stampede, hunters using a Crane will have two options: DPS buffs/debuffs (such as crit, attack speed, mastery, etc.) or utility abilities (a root and a stun usually). I would recommend using at least two Cranes as you're able to change pets after the DR has worn off on your first Lullaby (15 sec after Lullaby ends) and then reuse Lullaby with full duration. More than two Cranes is perfectly viable but it would mean alternating CC targets (especially useful against Spriest teams) and since most hunters will be using focus macros for CC, it would require changing focus targets or using mouseover macros as well. As for using Spirit Beasts, one could theoretically use 5 Spirit Beasts and change between them for the heal but I find that three is the perfect number as Roar of Sacrifice's duration is 12 sec compared to a 42 sec cooldown (assuming you're BM) so you could almost have perfect uptime on Roar of Sacrifice on the target of the enemy team. This is what I personally bring, along with a Quilen and a Serpent for the crit and attack speed buffs, respectively. I have my Serpent out at the start and at about 12 sec until the arena starts, I use his buff, dismiss him, switch to my Quilen, use his buff, dismiss him, summon my first Spirit Beast, use his buff, mount up, and then the arena starts. This is especially useful in 2s if you're playing double DPS as matches will be short. When playing with a healer (in 2s or 3s), I use two Cranes, a Spirit Beast, a Quilen, and a Serpent. Here, I don't use the Glyph of Stampede as I'm not running with a Spirit Beast for my main pet (merely using it for the mastery buff before the match starts) so when I use Stampede, it refreshes the attack speed, crit, and mastery buffs.

If you're talking about unrated battlegrounds, it doesn't really matter but I find there are some pets that "fit" certain battlegrounds. For example, in WSG, TP, EotS, or SotA, I like to use a Silithid for the root on flag carriers/demolishers. In AB or EotS, I also like to use my rhino for the knockback if I'm defending LM or in mid, respectively. Otherwise, I just stick with a Spirit Beast. I assume that some hunters will use a Crane in RBGs to CC healers but I personally don't have too much RBG experience. Using a Crane in unrated battlegrounds is unreliable as your CC is much more likely to be broken by one of your teammates than it is to be dispelled by an enemy.

I pvp with my chimera! :D But, like others have said, it fits my playstyle. The slowing debuff is amazing and allows me to chase down the ones who run away! Or, I'll hide and send in my chimera and aoe like crazy, blinding the entire pack trying to moves us back. I LOVE watching hoppy pallies drag that aoe around his buddies lol

I personally like my Chimera in battle grounds for it's slowing ability. More then once I was able to finder people from fleeing or chasing down another player thanks to slowing them and keeping them slowed. Plus big freaking flapping thing in your face is also fun.
