Hmm which sword.....

Unread post by Redith »

Considering I want a sword that is A. Made for use and battle ready, and B. Relatively inexpensive I have found the holy grail of weapons.
Cold steel has 2 very awesome sword Machetes that can take damage and are battle/training tested and run from 30-40 bucks. They even have reviews on youtube that prove their awesomeness...The problem is the two I like both look really cool. So I come to my fellow sword experts to help me pick.
One is a Kopis style, and one is Gladius style

I like the Gladius, it looks really cool to me. Not sure why but I automatically think Gladiator when I look at it. Thats probably why i think it looks so cool.

Thats why! I thought it looked familiar, I'm taking a mythology class this semester and we were looking at swords like these and other weaponry from that time period.

now i wish i remembered all the different tests that were done on these swords in The Deadliest Warrior  i remember that the gladius was a pretty basic weapon, doing 'alright' in cutting but excelling at thrusting (which is what it was designed for when paired with a roman shield).

For that shape of machete, i think all the weight is drawn into the curve (dont quote me on that, it looks like the one from deadliest warrior i saw but i dont know what type of warrior used it to research specifically) for a strong sweep motion. The overall design for sure is meant to slice rather then thrust so great if your agile and like to do a lot of arm work.

For convenience of sheathing, the gladius just goes right in and out of the sheath, but the machete needs the clasps undone to sheath/unsheathe which may prove troublesome if you are to actually carry these with you on site

This is all from what i can remember when i go back to watching deadliest warrior, i dont have any definite experience with these things or what they are able to achieve in combat

I prefer the cold steel one, but I find curved blades a bit awkward. That and I am not sure how flexible the use of the Gladius is with that handle...The cold steel looks like it would be quicker to use.

LOL I am glad I am not the only one that did this. I got on Netflix and watched Roman Centurion vs. Rajput Warrior, and Genghis Khan vs. Hannibal to see them in action

So the Gladius then. It seems to be winning right now.

Ahh, lol I thought the straight blade was the cold steel and the curved one was the Gladius machete.

From a quality standpoint: They're both from the same maker and are made from the same kind of steel and have the same finish, so I'd be stumped as well if I had to choose.

Practicality-wise, they're also both machetes, same blade length and both as durable as heck.

Style-wise, though, I lean toward the gladius, but only because I've had more experience with straight blades. I'd feel more comfortable holding more tang past the hilt and knowing that the point of balance is right at the hilt as well. Even though they're both in the same bucket for your training choices, it feels like it takes less training to master the gladius. In the end, though, when you pit the gladius against the kopis, you're basically pitting a Roman soldier against a Spartan.

Yeah, I'll throw in another vote for the Gladius one since the Kopis looks like it might be a bit of a pain to get in and out of the sheath in a timely manner (unless it easily slides?? even then I'd still lean towards Gladius more)

In all honesty I think this just goes more into personal preference if you like straight blades or curved ones.
