Am I able to solo anything on Isle of Giants?

Unread post by Pent »

Am I able to solo anything on Isle of Giants in order to get the book for taming and the minipets?

I know the humanoids are a little easier to tackle, and I've seen a hunter solo them... but I am not really geared like he was (he had 412k health, and I have about 250k-ish)...

I have been able to solo things before that I didn't think I could solo, like that one dragon/t-rex in Uldman that circles that one courtyard near a pyramid... I did it with my turtle... but i am curious if the humanoids on IoG were predictable (passed them turning into direhorns, and healing themselves)?

I didn't try to kill any when I was there because the other hunter seemed to be pulling one after another and I didn't want to mess up his mojo.

If you want to look at my hunter that i'll be using it is Tapeworm on Area 52.

Sorry for being so vague and being a wussy for not at least trying before asking for opinions.

:(

Well the only way you'll know for sure is to simply try it. They're not particularly difficult IMO as long as you interrupt the heals, they're pretty much just tank and spank. I was easily pulling 2 to 3 at a time (I'm better geared, like the other player you mentioned), but that gives you an idea of how manageable they are if you stay on top of interrupts and CC.

Just out of curiosity I deliberately swapped out gear to get my ilvl even lower than yours (ilvl 385) then went out to try it myself. Very easily killed two of them, the pet never dropped below 90% health. So there you go!

It is perfectly doable, I have farmed a tome on all my hunters, including this one: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/r ... nga/simple

As you can see, her gear is even worse than yours, and this is after I got a few pieces of loot, my ilvl was something like 420 when I did the dinomancers. It was most painful on her, because I had to heal my pet a lot while doing it, and if I pulled two dinomancers, it would sometimes end with my pet dead (I was using a parrot to tank, so a better pet like a beetle or turtle would probably not have the same problem in equal degrees). So, I waited for them to respawn and pulled one at a time. I seemed to have more problems getting my silencing shots off on time, but that's probably because they had time to heal more often than with my better geared hunters. I would advise just using some cheap focus skills while waiting for the first heal, as soon as it comes, silencing shot it, and then start using all your CDs, to try and burn him to the direhorn stage as fast as possible. Once he's a direhorn, you're all good, and can take your sweet time about killing him, as he won't heal any longer.

Also, if you do pull two, just concentrate on keeping your pet alive and focus on one, as they don't heal each other, only themselves.

Edit: I can't remember if I was Survival or BM on her at the time, but Peanut's response makes me think that I was probably Survival as I had real problems keeping my pet alive. This hunter used to be Survival only, but I specced her to BM for the pets, after deleting half of my hunters, I just don't remember when I did it.

Good luck!

I did my test as survival, glyphed for mend pet and mending of course. The pet I used was a nether ray and I only had the pet to interrupt with as I didn't talent for silencing shot. I made sure mend pet never dropped off but I didn't see it take any big spikes in damage.

Granted this was just a test and isn't accurate since I was in a mix of lvl 70 and current raid gear. Mozag's suggestion is a good one - to basically start the damage going, wait for the heal to come up, interrupt it, and then hit any CDs you have to get it down to 50%. When I was farming these guys early on in the patch I did the same, except I let them heal, then just used CDs to burn them down to 50%.

For me, the dinomancers were the easiest with a tenacity-specced moth. The first heal I interrupted with Silencing Shot, the second with moth's silence spell. Tenacity meant slightly less Mend Pets needed. That's on a character that hasn't been to LFR yet but is eligible.

EDIT: Also, as they usually come in packs of two, frost trap one while you pull the other away from their camp.

While this feature of the Grimtotem Spirit Guide wasn't exactly intended... - it will still be possible in future for everyone who wishes to tame this NPC to do so

Bleh... I tried to solo one and after about 30sec I realized that I did not have Silencing Shot... so after about 10min of me or my pet not dying and him healing himself.. I decided to just run away and and get Silencing shot...

Haven't made it back yet.

Yeah, once I got Silencing Shot they were not that hard... was able to kill three pretty quickly...

I will have to try to farm them a little more when the Shaman that was there... isn't there.. =P

I myself have a very hard time soloing ANYTHING on that dumb island. My pets always end up dieing then stampeeding to keep some kind of agro off me then race to make sure I can rez my pet in time only to see it go down again and then get one/two shotted.

Plus so many kill stealers.. people taging a beast you tagged so when you die they get an easier kill.

>.> Ya... I gave up a long time ago trying to solo anything there. Hopes of the mount faded along with my busted gear.

The dinomancers are doable, i think i did them with my turtle? Just interrupt the heal and your sweet! I had good gear but i've seen them done with less. Took me about an hr or so for my book and then i helped a lesser geared hunter with theirs.

The dinosaurs are harder if you're after eggs/bones but again doable as long as you heal your pet. I only went for the lil ones and only the triceratops like ones. The devilsaurs hurt cause of the bite. Only did one at a time for those unless stampede was up.

The small triceratops should be soloable with lower gear as long as you make sure to keep your pet healed at all times. If that doesn't seem to be enough you can try throwing a little pseudo kiting into the mix (concussive shot the mob, put pet on passive so it comes back to you and ticks a few extra heals, then send it back in).

The bigger triceratops can be soloed by kiting as you have a decent sized area or path cleared for it. Word of advice: if you see someone killing the bigger guys, stay clear of them. They can charge as well as do AE damage to anyone near them. I'm sure I've accidentally killed a number of other players who were watching and standing too close.

The smaller raptors can be tank and spanked without using CDs if you're a bit better geared - they hit decently hard. The bigger ones can be kited via cheetah, however I haven't tried that myself.

I could solo the baby Direhorns and Dinomancers in H lvl gear and some valour point stuff so I think you can :3

Silencing Shot the heals and keep Mend pet up and you should be good!

I solo the baby blue T's for bones/eggs. I don't do it for very long as my finger holding the A key starts to hurt after a while from kiting, but they're pretty easy. Given I do have decent gear, it just requires you to Concussion and side strafe in a circle until they die. I normally do it with my Quilen pet for Crit. Zhaoshi's Growl is turned off and he's on Passive to give me time to secure hate on it, then once I have a nice lead I send him in to chomp on it while I kite it in circles keeping it slowed. They have very small hit range from what I could tell and seem to need to be right on you to bite you, unlike the biiiiig T's. I tried one and their hit range is way to big for my kite path. Anyway, they drop a decent amount of bones, more than the little Direhorns, and I just prefer my little spot.

I've solo'd some Skyscreamers as well, but they're a bit more tricky. I'm sure if I kept at it I would eventually get the hang of it and know their AoE timing, but they run a lot faster than the T's and would sometimes catch me. I've not died to any, but have come close.

After 4 days and a total of about 10 hours... I finally got the book to drop.

This is all fine and dandy, but during that time I also had four (3 of one kind and a single of another) minipets drop... and... well... I totally forgot that I can recage them to sell, so I used all of them so they were added to my minipet list... bleh.

But I got the book!

You can cage them off your mini-pet list, Pent. :) Just right click on one of them and choose the caging option, and sell away!

LOL... Well ok. I guess I will stop killing these when I'm just trying to get a couple to sell. =P
