Are all pets really alike now???
Hi guys, sorry if this question has been answered already (probably) but I couldn't find my answer so iI have to ask again.
I've read something that makes me believe that unlike when I played Wow in the past, every pet are now the same (save for the look). There are only 3 families of pet (as before), but they lost their special species abilities.
Now after a couple of years break, I was into making a hunter again as I remembered how cool it was to tame beasts and use the right one for the situation but now, I'm kinda hesitating to put lots of hours into building one up, just to see that pets are now crap.
Thank you in advance for your answer and I'm glad this forum is still up and running after all these years!

You could easily go to the wow-petopia.com page and look at each family type and see that they're still unique pets that each now bring a different buff (and some utility abilities) to the table to make more pets usable/viable for raiding and PvP.
Almost all pets are now very usuable and bring something to the table.

There are not only 3 families of pets. You're confusing family and spec.
Pets nowadays are "alike" in that any given pet of the same spec should do the same damage as any other (keep in mind buffs and stuff will alter actual results).
They're not alike in that each pet family gives different buffs or abilities, and exotics get 2 abilities.

Ah ok thanks for the information. So the petopedia is still up to date then. What a relief!
Well, I wasn't sure about doing a druid (which was my old main) or a hunter for my return. Since they completely fuck up the balance druid with their moon/sun crap, and that the pets are still different from one another in terms of game play, I'll invest in a hunter then! Choice is really easy to make now lol.

If you're making a "new main," I would also suggest you consider what you're planning to do with the character in your decision process (I know, off topic from orig post but I can't help it!) Hunters right now are pretty amazing for soloing, so if that type of content appeals to you, that would be a good choice.Niavlys wrote:Well, I wasn't sure about doing a druid (which was my old main) or a hunter for my return. On the other hand if you're wanting to raid, I will warn you that hunters have a harder time getting spots now, because there's so many people playing them, whereas balance druids are pretty highly desirable.
I don't PVP so I can't give advice on that.

Re: Are all pets really alike now???
hey! Thanx for the input. Well since its been many years since I left Wow, it was around when cataclysm came out, I'll keep at soloing to avoid pissing people off. I remember people here dislike grouping with not optimal caracters and gears and so on.
Ultimately I'm prolly gonna make a druid healer as I remember having quite a fun with it. As for the balance, as I said, they completely fucked it up adding this retarded sun/moon thing They took something fun, efficient and simple and turned it into a hell of a mumbo jumbo to understand. I'r read many forums and no one can give a simple and clear explanation about it. Just enough to understand that it must be a pain in the butt to play one.

Re: Are all pets really alike now???
I think the confusion may have begun because there was a time when the damage could be different depending on which individual NPC you tamed. Like, a wolf from one place might carry buffs that a different wolf didn't have. And some families had much better damage than others. It meant that hunters felt like they could only bring one or two specific pets to raids and not the ones they loved. Fortunately that part was standardised and any pet can now be any spec, so every hunter brings something special to them

Yep! I remember back in vanilla, I was probably the only hunter on my realm crazy enough to run around with a wolf (Veritas, my Felwood wolf). At that time, pretty much all wolves were considered totally useless, and I was bashed for it constantly. A lot of guilds back then would refuse to even recruit a hunter who didn't have one of the cats with a really fast attack speed, like The Rake, or some other "special" pet that had something the others in it's family didn't have.Wain wrote:I think the confusion may have begun because there was a time when the damage could be different depending on which individual NPC you tamed. Now you can bring any pet you want and not have to worry about the potential flaming for bringing a "useless" pet. They made attack speeds, abilities, and a few other things streamlined. Just make sure Growl is turned off, and your pet is in Ferocity spec (which you can change by going to your own spec window, and selecting the "Pet" tab at the bottom when your pet is out) if you're in a dungeon or raid. Yeah he was well known because The Rake was low lv and had a 1.2 attack speed. But at least two pets were faster: the bats from the ZG raid and Broken Tooth. they had a 1.0 attack speed. Most bears were slow.Torachi wrote: the cats with a really fast attack speed, like The Rake
There was a wolf that did shadow dmg instead of melee ( i think Lupos). Very useful agains target with alot armor.
To be honest I miss that sometimes.I known now you can use the pet you want but back then some pets were well known. For instance
King Bangalash. Back then he was a +lv 40 elite mob and not that easy to tame. He was the only pet with the passive buff "Cobra Reflexes". Now he is so meaningless, its sad :/
Sometimes its feels more dull these days.
But I'm glad we don't have to tame a mob to get a higher rank in a petskill.

I dunno, I even kind of miss having to tame random beats for the ranks. I worked my butt off to train Veritas, but by the time I was done, he was amazing. I'd like for them to auto-level to my hunter's level after taming, though. That I could do without. Everything else I miss, though.

I thought it was fun taming a cat to learn a bite or claw then teaching it to a wolf or a bear.
The real problem with all that was the limited storage for pets, so you really could only have 1 or 2 "main" pets and then use your last spot(s) to rotate through the pets
Given the fixed this by expanding storage to now hold dozens, I really dont see why we cant get the old way back
