How many of you have dealt with ignorant people?

Unread post by Suicune »

A little whining incoming...

In the years I have been playing WoW, I had only like 1 person make fun of my spec, this was in BC before I did anything other than PvP, and at that time my spec DID suck- it was a hybrid BM spec that pulled talents from MM and Surv that I thought would help me in PvP. I was still learning my class, and it was my first MMO, so yeh, I was noobish. After that, I respecced into a MM/Surv spec that worked well in PvP, and fell in love with it.

After the xpack hit and I started leveling Sui to 80, I realized that I was out of practice since I shelved my main to level my new Deathknight to 80 (he was too fun and cute/badass, but shame on me), and I felt like I was dying constantly- was at one point so frustrated I wanted to stop playing her altogether which hurt. A few guildies coerced me to respec back to BM because the PvP spec wouldn't quite cut it, and I relearned the class- as a side bonus was able to tame that pretty cat I liked but couldn't get prior- my buddy Loque.

After the xpack hit, the guild began to grow to a nice size, and we began to raid. I learned more about my class, and the right way to spec for raiding. I researched and tested stuff out, and realized that with the knowledge of the class, the years playing it, and new tricks and tips, as well as tweaking my UI, and getting my addons set up to maximize my DPS, that I could still pull some good numbers in my nerfed spec. I was top DPS in mostly everything I did. I had been complimented on my DPS and never spoken down to by harder core raiders, or any of that. As a complete shock, I have actually had people ask me questions about certain things, sometimes advice. I still avoided joining raids with hardcore guilds because I thought they would moan that I run a sub-optimal spec. Never happened. My server isn't a good one for progression, it's quite abysmal, but people piss and moan about anything. I was #1 and #2 DPS in VoA 25 the last few times I did it, and that was with harder core raiders in the group- so you could imagine why my guild thought I was nuts for being hesitant for joining a pug 25 ICC (my guild is a 10 man) without anyone else from the guild as a security blanket (lol). I explained to them the flak BM hunters get on the Hunter forums, and had to try to make them see the stigma the spec holds, that even the best BM players can't shake. I also told them that no one has belittled me for running BM, shockingly, so I couldn't warrant my fear of pugging 25s with non casual raiders. A few guildies who used to be in hardcore raid guilds said they had BM hunters who raided with them, and just couldn't understand where I was coming from. Was I being too hard and critical on myself?

Well. The day after we had that conversation in guild chat, I came across a level 23 Druid in Heirloom gear in Thunderbluff while I waited for one of my officers to come make bolts out of some cloth for me. I saw he was inspecting me, and received a whisper from him stating that I would do much more DPS as Survival. All I could do was laugh. Right now, in my gear, I find my DPS is on par/above/or occasionally just under Survival hunters in similar gear. When I told him this he cursed me off, said yeh right, and called me a noob. Guess no one notified him that MM (which is my off spec) is the only spec that pulls a significant amount of DPS over BM at my gear level. I didn't even explain to him that MM is currently the top DPS spec. He called me a noob a few more times, and told me to get a life. Then he logged. I wanted to reach through my laptop and strangle him. If he wants to belittle me on my spec, he should find all the people I out-DPS and lecture them.
I always prided myself on the fact that I could play a spec I enjoy, with the pets I enjoy, and do damn good. Lol... maybe he was one of the hunters I out-dpsed in one of the VoAs recently ;)

Just like in retail, I can't shake the anger off like I should when someone tries to get under my skin. A customer told me I need to work on getting 'Alligator Skin' to let crap just roll off my back. You'd think after over 12 years of being/managing in retail I'd have it already, but especially when I can't say what I want to, I just boil inside.

How many of you BM hunters catch crap for your spec? I know we have some successful BM raiders on here, so I know I'm not the only one who knows how to play the spec. How do you handle people? Ignore them? I'd love to hear your stories and experiences regarding specs, raiding, and other players/servers.

I really only raid with my guild. They accept me as bm, and they are my security blanket. I feel safe around them. I do pug VOA, and in randoms, etc, I have gotten comments about my spec. I just hold out the hope that one day, bm will not have the association it currently has, because I will not give up my spec.

Just curious, what kind of dps are you able to pull? I'm never second in things like VOA pugs. I'm always a bit lower down.

Is that with ICC buff or like a heroic? Gabbey can barely pull 4k in heroics, though I'm specced a bit off, so that's probably got something to do with it.

No one ever bothered me about my spec either until an ICC25 pug on time. I was whispered, "You should think about speccing SV or MM, no?" And I replied, "No, I'm doing fine :) ". And I was, I was beating he and an MM hunter, or on some fights staying right up there with them. Then when the Stinky fight rolled around, he said, "The BM hunter should put up Aspect of the Wild". Like I'm so useless for being BM that I should be the one to sacrifice my DPS for the raid (which I do in my guild and don't mind, but it was just the way he said it). But, when everyone but me and a couple dps, and the tank and one healer were left standing, he whispered, "Now no one can say anything about your spec". Yeah, ya think? BM is NOT the trash spec people make it out to be. I don't know why some people are so blind that they'll keep knocking it even when it's outperforming other "better" specs. I have since switched to a SV dual-spec, but only because I was getting bored with doing BM for five years and wanted to play with something else. But I wouldn't think twice about going back into a raid as BM. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I couldn't ignore the nagging. I wasn't mean in my reply, but I made it a point to prove that I could do just as well or better than the other two better-geared hunters. But no, I can't really let something like that go ignored. But I don't feel the need to be nasty in my reply, either. I'll let my skills do the talking. ;) (that sounded more braggy than I meant for it to)

Oh and one time on trash, I kid you not, I did 20k as BM. It was those pulls before the giant valkyrie lady. The mage was doing 30k, so it's not like I was in the lead, but I was #2. But on boss fights, I was staying around 7k for the most part. Haven't had a raid night to try out my SV since then, with my grandpa in the hospital, but tonight is our raid night so we'll see how much better SV supposedly is. It probably will be an improvement, but I doubt it will put my BM spec to shame.

Well DPS fluctuates depending on how on my game I am, the group makeup (buffs), and where I am. On movement heavy fights, my DPS can drop down to 4500, but 6k or more is the usual for 10mans in general, I haven't run a ton of 25s to estimate my going DPS in there on a regular basis. The one ICC 25 I ran (my first time in 25 man version) I dropped down to 6 or 7th in DPS against 25 man geared MM or Surv hunters and other classes (#1 in raid smacked a good 10k, I leveled out with roughly 7, almost 8k along with most of the others near me on charts), which was expected but sucked lol. Plus I was crapping bricks because an totally inexperienced new guildie started the raid and I didn't think it would actually happen, and could have looked bad on my guild (since about 5 of us came).
I'm the same way about proving BM can be good if played well. It was always a silent contest though, since no one ever made me feel crappy for being BM, was always in my head, from what I read on those stupid hunter forums, and I guess little alt morons too hehe. I've been too lazy to run many 5 mans, but I will evaluate my DPS in there since I got some fun new gear recently.

Edit- I poked around my screenies to see if i could find any DPS charts up, I was #1 on Stinky in a recent run on 10man, with 7392, this was before the new ICC buff. Found a pic of 10man Saurfang, with new buff, 7820. My damn Recount doesn't show in most pics due to the way I have my UI to mostly disappear out of combat /sigh

Sui:

Here's what I tell people who try and hassle me about being a beast master.

"If you are on my server and in my raid group, then you know which of our raid officers to approach if you have questions or comments about my spec or my damage output. I also think if you're on my server and in my raid group, you'll know what she's going to tell you when you speak to her on this matter. Now. If you're not on my server and in my raid...I fail to see how my spec is in any way shape or fashion your business."

:)

I haven't been hassled in a good while, though. I have however been asked how I got the gear I have and how much damage I do on one of the "big" fights like Deathwhisper or Festergut. Best of luck to you.

BM is just as good as any of the other specs, even better if you know how to use it more. I've always specced BM and feel like a pro with it. I never had any problems with people criticizing about my speccing negatively yet, but when that comes, I'll either ignore or play fun with them.

Since ranged can pretty much just stand still and shoot at her, it's a pretty good gauge of what you can do in a fully-buffed raid environment under real-time conditions, as opposed to the perfect laboratory conditions reflected by most if not all spreadsheets.

I did a dungeon run recently where the healer would not shut up about my BM spec, he tried to kick me and failed, then left. It was annoying.

I haven't encountered to many people who complained about my spec. Then again, I am usually first in DPS and overall damage, unless some one in ICC 25 or the rare well played ICC 10 man gear comes along. Actually, and oddly, I've never had anyone poke me about not having a wolf.

But I do deal with ignorant people a plenty.

I've only been harassed once about being a BM. And strangely enough a fellow dungeon player came to my defense without her even knowing me and had never played with me before.
Even lately in doing the heroic dungeons I've been left alone if I am running in BM spec. I try to be at least 3rd in dps. MM is an excellent spec to run with but find I need to be much more cautious otherwise I pull to much aggro from the tank and have found myself with an ear chewin from the tank and mobs beatin the crap out of me.

Screw em. I don't care how pissy they get. I won't run MM just because they want me to same as not running a wolf because they want me to.

It's nice to see most of you have the same luck I do with people- almost no run-ins with these people. I guess that doesn't help make it easier to deal with when someone says something negative about how you play when they don't even know you. I feel terrible for those of you who do have regular run-ins with ignorant people. It really comes down to the player, not the pet or spec (in most cases). As for pets, I have never had anyone do really anything other than compliment my pets, even when I brought my Warp Stalker into a random by accident after running some battlegrounds. Our tank ended up DC'ing and while we waited for a new one, we all decided to see how well my pet would do tanking it lol. We downed him, but 1 or 2 of us died I think, and we all laughed in good spirits about it. I think that this thread showed me to do what I did at first to that Druid- laugh. Laugh and pity people for being truly ignorant, pity them for trying to ruin someone's day, pity them because they must have that bad of a life that they have to try to bring others down. What I tell my guild is play the spec you like- but spec it correctly and play it well (if raiding). You will be happier and do better in the spec you like rather than a spec you despise. You will do better with the pet you are most bonded with, not the pet that does most damage that you don't like at all. Not sure why, but it could be psychological. Of course, a tenacity pet won't push out the dps no matter how much you bond with it, so you might need to shoot those arrows a little harder if you want to run with one in a raid

The only reason I've been running around as Surv on Deathly is because, to put it simply, watching a mob that would usually get a hit or two on you drop dead halfway from where it started to you is rather amusing. All through my lower levels, I ran as a mixed BM/MM hunter, so I wasn't pulling that much dps with my messed up talents. It wasn't until I got into the guild I am now that I switched to dual spec BM/Surv because I find exotic beasts to be a nice twist after playing Surv and having regular pets being a nice refresh after being BM for awhile.

There has only been one person who has nagged at me about my spec, and he's a friend. He saw that my talent points were practically crying from the low dps I was doing and helped me fix them a little. But he wasn't like all 'elitest asshat' on me, or I would've had to curbstomp his face in with my heels.
