Most "Tolkien "like pets/mounts

Unread post by Ana »

Please don't see this as an "orc bad - elf good " post but I been pondering which WoW pets would fit into the Tolkien univetse.

My own thoughts so far:
We know orcs in tolkien had wargs so wolves, corehounds, hyenas, and darkhounds are best as orc, troll and goblin pets.

In the books there are no record of elf keeping pets. . Some birds helped the elves but they were of a type not represented in wow. .

In the movie, Thranduil is riding a stag, so closes I can get to elf pets are stags. .And horses but we cannot tame none uniform horses. So unicorns? - the brighter colors of them anyway.

Lúthien/Tinuviel had a big dog which helped her so maybe mastiffs?

What are you guys perception of Tolkien / Lord of The Rings pets?

My first thought was eagles because they played a key role in helping them escape in the story.

I think dogs are the only ones mentioned that are kept as practical / hunting pets (other than the wargs of the Enemy). Beruthiel kept cats, which she loathed and used as spies (Tokien seemed to have a really low impression of cats). Beorn employed a range of animals as helpers, but they weren't exactly the same as pets and he was an isolated case, as was Radagast and his animals (still trying to blot out the movie adaptation of him).

Wain - yeah for some reason Tolkien don´t speak well of cats.... Animals as helpers will do too but I think the elves did not have a lot? other than Tinivuel who had a large dog helped her i cannot think of other pets.. other than the loathed cats :(. As far as I recall Tinivuels dog were white? It seems that the elves favor ligth colored animals?
The dwarfs had the ravens of Erebor, the rams , and that one pig from the movie...
The bardsmen had birds - atleast in the book, who could speak and understand common

Dewclaw - Yeah I thought eagles too.. but the wow eagles are soo small so I think Hippygryf and gryphon will work in their place?

Beorn was a black/brown bear in the movie... so which of the wow bears would you say look most like him?

old models

I feel a newer model be best? I kinda want a white bear but he was black/brown so there's lore involved not to get a white one? Could maybe go for the dark grey one.. but its read eye is very non canon lore for Beorn..

i thought maybe a lighter version of Hati would be a good make for Huan (the dog who aided Tinuviel)? or maybe the old white worg model?

I would guess that Beorn would be more like the brown than the black, since it's the European bear type and Middle Earth's ecology was strongly European.

As for model, neither really looks like a real bear. Maybe the newer one though? I'm not fond of that model, but it's a bit more realistic.

As for cats, folklore has often depicted cats as callous or cruel, while dogs have often been used to represent unswerving loyalty. I guess Tolkien followed on from that. I don't mind too much since I'm definitely more a dog person :D but cat lovers may not appreciate it.

heh im a cat person myself .. and torn between using the light colored Hati and my Loque...atm im using the light colored Hati to see if he would work for me.

For elvish mounts i thought if any of these would do? - and off course the equivalent in animals would be good as pets ?

Ground
Horses off course, as they ride on horses/ponies in the LOTR and the Hobbit. I feel unarmored ones fits best

Undead horses for the wring wraiths?

Rams for the dwarfs as they in the movie do ride rams.. cant remember right now if they do it in the book..

Moose for elves? I know Thranduil rides a stag but we dont have a stag mount so Moose?

Eleks and wolly mammoths as Oliphants?

Divine boars and boars for the dwarfs too ( he rides on in the movie after all)

Hyenas and Wolves as wargs for the orcs/trolls/goblings? - maybe core hounds too in some extend?

Flying

Fellbats and Wind Riders for the orcs/gobling/trolls as they do have tamed war bats in Tolkien. Antoran Hounds might work too

Gryphons for the elves/dwarfs/humans as we dont have eagles as flying - Hippogrif might work too and maybe Wonderwing 2.0

Rylaks as the wring wraits flying mounts? some Cloud Serpents might work too
