They've been doing this for years. IMO, anyone who falls for it deserves to get hacked.

Argh I get those tells waaaaay too often. :( I hope the poor grammar is a give-away for people who might be too quick to notice the misspelled name. I can definitely see people panicking when hearing "your account will be suspended" though.

On that same note, some scammer once sent a mail to a bunch of guildies pretending to be an officer toon with an 'i' in his name, copying it with an 'í' (so, for example, Pízza instead of Pizza). Something about "check out this neat website I found!!! [scammy url of scamminess]" It is really hard to tell in the mail interface and font and a few guildies fell for it. :(

I dont think anyone deserved to be hacked... i almost fell for this cause i was buzy looking for Krush, and had a ticket open and was waiting for a GM.. It just take 2 sec of " OH NOO WHAT NOW" thinking to make u panic... i did not fell for it, but im sure that some will.. just imagine a young player who never been in contact with blizzard costumer service would probally go to the site in the whisper.
Makes me sad to think of ppl loosing their account due to this kind of scame.. i dont think its deserved

Aye i think the same. What Saturo said was a bit too harsh.
Say, my 14 year old little sister, who is not a native English speaker but loves warcraft, has gotten these scam messages, but always comes to me to ask for help first.

I stand by what I said. It clearly says, on several places while starting the game, to "Beware of suspicious messages.", and, IMO, a badly spelled username whispering you an even worse message is obviously suspicious. In addition, a Blizzard posted has a small blue Blizz logo before their name, as the game repeatedly informs us.

I understand what you mean, but you can't ignore the fact that there are some younger people who haven't had much experience with the customer service. Or have trouble with the language barrier.
Although, I wouldn't mind if some of the server trolls and griefers got scammed. They definitely deserve a little time off.

Yeah, in all seriousness, falling for one of these scams does not mean you deserve to be hacked - if you're not intentionally trying to hurt others then you should be able to expect to be left alone, whether you are "smart", "stupid" or etc.

It's great that they have warnings to watch out for suspicious messages and all, but that in no way absolves hackers nor does it mean victims "deserve what they get".

That's actually a dangerous mentality.

Just hope that going to that site by itself, doesn't infect your machine with keyloggers, trojans and various other nasty organisms, which is a definite possibility with attack sites (and having an antivirus program isn't 100% protection)... :|

If you get these kinds of tells, or see gold selling spam in trade chat, please right click on the name and report spam. Blizzard will investigate and deal with the account if enough people report it. So help eliminate this sort of thing by reporting it with two easy button clicks :D

An even worse scam is ones sent to your email. I have gotten several scam emails originating from blizzard.com even. Hackers are able to spoof email accounts to make it look like it was sent from blizzard. It had all the text of an official blizzard email as well. 2 things set it apart though:

1. It just said "Hello," instead of "Hello (My Name)," in the greeting.

2. The hyperlink included further down in the email looked like it was going to blizzard.com site. But if i moused over it, the tooltip showed it went to a different site alltogether.

Point is, be very very very careful what you click on. Some sites are able to inject a keylogger onto your computer just by clicking a link. Internet browsers will have security flaws that allow these things through so always be aware of what you are clicking.

This! Blizzard always uses the Icon beside the name. If your account was suspended then you wouldn't be playing..

What I love is the lv1 toons that whisper "hello"
I always respond back with, "Hello Do I know you or are you a fail scammer ass-wipe wasting my time?"...funny, I never get response back...hmm...

But there have been those false scam whispers for years, and the trade and other channel spams. What I would like to see though is having trade and other chat channels unavailable to characters below lv 10. That eliminate much spam for many people, and then it would just be the /say spam to worry about in the given areas. But I'd rather one area just be effected then all areas withing a chat channel.

Yes, this may cause issues for some low lv toons trying to make bank alts, but honestly, how long does it take to get to lv 10 anyhow? So, really not that much of an issue. That and most charter sigs can be done just from people in one city.

Actually, people shoud get their bank alts to level 10 anyway. Blizzard doesn't keep records on characters below level 10. So if you somehow fall for this really obvious scam and your account does get hacked, the iems and gold your level 1 bank had will be lost for good.

As for your statement, I'm not really sure it'll help. Oh certainly it'll help prevent the spam flux... for a while. As you said, it doesn't take much to get to level 10 these days. And these gold scammers are nothing if not determined.

1) Not everyone knows this

2) The scammer specifically said the account would be suspended if the user didn't act.

Yes, we all know that Blizz bans first and asks questions later. Yes, we all know that Blizz uses the blue icon. Yes, we all know that Blizz GMs don't use a name variation of Blizzard. But not everyone does. Why do we insist on blaming the person that got scammed?

"Oh it's his fault she got robbed, he should have bought a home alarm system."

"Oh it's her fault she got raped, she should have known better than to wear a short dress to a late-night party."

Blaming the victim is a terrible cultural heritage and we need to get the hell over it.
