Am I the only one....

Unread post by Bundia »

That is completely disgusted by Terror Spinner?

I'll first have to say that I have arachnophobia. I've always hated them. In fact, when I first started playing I almost quit in Ghostlands because of the spiders. Just ew.

Well this past Sunday I spent the day rare hunting. I found about 15 and ended up getting myself a Dark Whelpling too. After years of on and off farming. OMG. Andyhow, I decided to go to Zul'drak to see if I could farm up that Raptor. And on the way out, I decided to check Gondria's and Terror Spinner's spawns. I have Gondria, but I figured I'd help out a fellow hunter if I found him. And I have always thought the model for Terror Spinner was cool even after they made his model tameable on other mobs. But my fear of spiders always told me to write him off. Still I thought I would check it out and at least TRY him out. Well low and behold I stumbled upon him. Wow. So cool in the wild yet so small after the tame.

But now I'm at a bit of a crossroads. I do think he's a cool model. And his idle is cute too. But walking him reminds me of a spider running at me in real life. And this need to squish and then hurl comes over me. My skin crawls. Plus there is this part of me that feels guilty for taming him to then just abandon him. And I could use a really decent PvP pet once Rated BGs start. I have Aotona, but the web ability is really nice to have. I'm pretty sure he's just going to sit in my stable because I can't take him out other than to idle with him. And I can't abandon him out of guilt.

So back to my question. I am not trying to be offensive at all. Am I the only one that is grossed out by him?

I'm not as violently disgusted by the spider family, but you're not alone. I'm not an obvious RPer, but each of my characters has a small 'personality' that has nothing to do with me. My troll hunter is afraid of spiders, so I would never tame Terror Spinner on Tanin. I've tried over and over again with different models of spiders, tarantulas, even the spiny ones and he freaks out and abandons them all.

So you're definitely not alone.

Aww, even though he's creeping you out a bit I'm always glad to see more spider appreciation (hehe, I love spiders, what can I say).

It sounds like you do have a curiosity about him though. I know a lot of arachnophobes who wouldn't even be able to go near him in the wild, let alone think such things as him being cool and interesting. Maybe give yourself some more time to get used to the model? Have you ever had one of the other spider models? Maybe try a different looking one, or perhaps a tarantula. Build up a tolerance through those and then come back to Terror Spinner and see if it's less jarring.

Another option I would recommend is to try the Pet Emote addon. If you aren't familiar with it, it's a simple addon that gives your pets personality through random emotes that go off every so often. The spider ones are adorable, and there's many times where emotes have helped me bond more with a pet by giving them character.

I must admit that he's growing on me. I think I'll try to lvl him. Though my main motivation to keep him is for PvP in the future. And I have a feeling if they finally let Horde tame the Green Plaguehound, I might trade him out for one of those. I'm on the fence though because of the fact they will be incredibly popular in Cata. I think I may just have my Worgen tame one of the Plaguehounds. I am running out of stable space! I have 4 free slots open not including Swiftmane. I'm holding a slot for her in case one day I can tame her! In fact, right now I'm trying to figure out which pets are going to get moved to the Worgen. I'm working on the low level ones first. God I wish Worgen were Horde. She'll get little play other than for taming!

Trust me, you're not alone in your arachophobia.
I'm staying clear of any spider-infected zone and I would never even consider taming a spider, no matter how rare the model would be, and I'm a serious collecor, or how cool the spider family ability would be.
Not ever! Not touching spiders, IRL or ingame, EVER!

But, you seem to develop a fondness for him despite him being a spider

If nothing else, it's a step forward in getting rid of that crippling, awful fear we have. That's progress and I'm so proud of you.

first grats on that tame, I was kinda' looking for that one but never got em'.

Regarding the arachnophobia, kind of, but not so much in game, I mean it's a boney spider what's not cool about that?

My eye sight is rather poor, so if it's big enough for me to see with my glasses on it's big enough for my husband to somehow grab it & let it outside, or squish it whichever comes first.

Out of curiousity... do the other spiders that share his skin (or any other spider skins) also share his idle animation?

I am interested in a spider, but the only one I want right now is the purple Naxx model... but I kinda like how the newer creepier ones look.

I had a green spider called Swat for pvp some time ago. I'm not that fussed about them ingame, and in real life it depends.
I think small spiders are cute and they're quite useful critters, since the area i live in is near a river. River = tons of flying insects, and yeah, they're a menace.
But anything big, long (loooooong) legged, just makes me shiver (if anyone has ever heard of the Hertfordshire spider, you know what I mean. >.< ).
Tarantulas though, I've always thought they're beautiful. Never held one, but always wanted to try (i think i'd still be quite jumpy if I came across one in the wild). :3

Far from alone, my friend. My wont tame ANY spiders on Taluwen. I roleplay her as an arachnaphobic(childhood trauma in the ghostlands...long story...) and she FLIPS if she sees a spider of any kind.

Nope, I am not a fan of spiders. But RL it's more an 'enemy of my enemy...' type thing. Since they eat mosquitoes, they can stay... for now. In game, I avoid them since I know people who are arachnaphobic.

I myself, cant stand spiders, they are the freakiest creepiest things on the planet! (and there is some wierd shit out there!!)
Even just watching them on tv makes me want to throw a shoe at it! I tamed a spider once and the moment I learned whatever rank pet ability it had, I ditched that thing! Yeah, some of the models look really cool...from afar, but I personally, can't keep one as a pet... *Shudders*

I actually tried to overcome my skittishness with spiders IRL....by trying to catch a wolf spider in my house instead of killing it.

....lets just say that didn't work so well......

EDIT: Oh... and just to make it perfectly clear... that is NOT my spider or my hand. No way I would let that thing close to me.

That is a beautiful spider, Pent! I love the subtle markings and spots on it's legs and mouth parts, it's so pretty. I'm not afraid of spiders around my house. I've always liked them, especially the long-legged ones. They can stay and I won't bug spray them, just so long as they eat bugs. Which they do, so I don't mind. It's only when they think they can creep *inside* that they start intruding on my turf and then it's war! Also, black widows have to go. I won't tolerate them.

I suspect the 'got to go' rule can and should apply to anything venomous and/or capable of killing you. Failing that, they can land you in the hospital with a lovely bill to boot. I've heard the antidote is no fun either.

I have never heard of that spider before, but I agree with Calomel, it's very beautiful! I would love to see one in person. Spiders are always welcome in my home, they keep the true pests away, and I always go out of my way to ensure their survival. Just the other morning I found a poor guy stranded in the bathroom sink, unable to escape from the slippery edges, so I lifted him out and introduced him to a shelf on the wall where he's welcome to make a little home and catch flies and mosquitoes for me. :D

Naturally I wouldn't mess around with a venomous type if they were common in my area, but they're not. I am attracted and fascinated by the deadly species though.

Daddy-long-legs are my BFFs in my house. They can go where ever they want. I've held them too, heck even fed them if I caught a fly. I'd throw it in their web. Also the tiny fuzzy and amusing jumping spiders are okay too.

It's the black widows, brown recluse, and wolf spiders that bug me....

My husband is terrified of spiders, but I can understand why. Myself, I love tarantulas and Daddy-long-legs. When I was a kid, sweeping all the spider webs from the porch used to be my job. I'd go out of my way to save all the long-legs and make sure they got to safety before clearing out the cobwebs for them to rebuild. They were like my little mosquito-eating pets, and I think it's hilarious that they jiggle and shake when disturbed.

To start, that picture almost brought back my dinner. My real life rule for spiders is that is if I don't see you, you get to live. All bets are off once I have spotted you especially if you run at me. I understand that they are the good guys, but they are gross. And the funny thing is that in the 5 years my boyfriend and I have been dating and about the 4 we've lived together, I've found about 40 spiders. He's found 1? Maybe 2? They KNOW I don't like them. Seriously I have several spider stories that convince me they are either suicidal or are attempting to avenge fallen cousins of some sort. But I know there has to be at least 10 spiders living in my apartment right now. And that's fine. They can live here until I see one. And I either start smacking them with whatever is closest that won't get guts on me, or enlist the boyfriend to either take them outside or kill them. Spider, you did NOT follow the rule.

The more and more I think about it, maybe my parents shouldn't have watched Arachnophobia in front of me as a young child.

Anyhow, no update on my story with Terror Spinner. I didn't end up playing much late this evening.
