Help please (computer/firefox issue)

Unread post by Skyshot »

All fixed now. Room mate woke up and saved the day.
He tinkered around and found out it was just one simple time/date related setting on my computer causing all of the fuss.
Everything is as smooth as it was and McAfee is working without a hitch.
It's always a simple solution that I don't see through my haze of worry.

Now I just need to call google to get my gmail straightened out... ;P

Original:
I won't sugar coat it... I am terrible when it comes to understanding computers and their issues. I'm even worse when it comes to resolving the issues on my own.
I tend to get panicked when things go wrong (and stay wrong for too long) with my computer. >_<

Lately I've been having an issue with (what I think) is firefox. Every time I go into my account settings for any site (facebook, google, yahoo, battlenet, etc) I get a popup error that says something along the lines of Security Connection Failed. It says it's something's wrong with an Invalid Security Certificate (no clue what that is). When It's not that it's a firefox block of the page (also about the security certificate) claiming that "If you have visited this site in the past and you're getting this page, it could be an imposter webpage". Something to that effect anyway. I don't know how to fix this and to top it all off, I get a similar popup when I go to the WoW Launcher. I've been trying to use my McAfee but it's running very very slowly. As in the pages take forever to load fully (10-15 minutes). I'm starting to worry that this is indicating towards something nasty lurking around my computer. I've asked my computer savvy room mate but he says he's never seen it before and doesn't know either... (I can't even get on my gmail account because I changed my password and forgot what my recvory email is...)

So I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hardplace right now and am getting desperate to find out the cause and solution.
Does anyone have a computer illiterate friendly solution for me?

If there's one thing you can always get, it's plenty of people who will tell you how to fix your computer. :D

Anywho, it does sound like you've got something sneaking around. If you keep getting page redirects, then I'd not do anything sensitive on the machine till it's cleaned up a bit.

First, see if you can download Malwarebytes from a clean machine and then transfer it to your machine with a USB stick. Once you've got it installed on your PC, it should try to update itself with the latest definitions.

Next, you'll want to restart your PC and hit the F8 key as soon as you hear it make the start up beep. You should be given a black screen with a white text menu offering to let you into safe mode. If Malware bytes was able to update itself, choose regular Safe Mode. Regular safe mode will not have internet access, and is helpful in keeping creepy crawlies from functioning while you try to get rid of them. If Malwarebytes wasn't able to update, choose Safe Mode with Networking and see if it will update now. No matter which Safe Mode you choose, do a full scan with Malware bytes while in Safe Mode.

That fixes the vast majority of these things. :)
