Eh, I'd say Vanilla was more group intensive then Cataclysm. With fourty man raiding and even all kinds of group quests in outdoor areas, back then you pretty much needed a guild to do anything major. Even PvP, if you REALLY wanted those major titles, required for you to have a constant, solid group of people who played consistently. But yes, Cataclysm does seem to be placing more emphasis on groups as a whole.
