I'm seeing a couple of interesting threads here. :)

I play primarily female characters with a few male 'utility' characters -- like bank alts, start-up-on-a-new-server-death-knights, or the paladin that I know I will be abandoning at level 12 -- thrown in. But almost all of my (tens of) hunters are female.

Like others have mentioned already, I tend to play on RP realms and I find it easier to get into character with a female .. err .. character. And I also find that the overly-muscled male look of a lot of races really grates on me (and is annoying to see around to boot).

I'm not terribly fond of male trolls because of their bad posture, but I do adore male blood elves (sexy!) and I don't mind male undead (they just aren't as cool as female undead). On the Alliance side, male humans are acceptable and male night elves as okay only because they are an alternative to the annoyingly bouncy females.

As a RL female, I almost always roll female avatars in the game.

My one exception (as of now) is my male Tauren named Khau. He was the first character I ever created and leveled up to 80. I just tend to think of male Taurens in general as being rather loveable and misjudged - sort of like the Beast, from Disney's animated feature, Beauty and the Beast. To everyone else, Khau may seem like a massive brut, but to me, his heart and soul are that of a cuddly teddy bear.

If I were to roll more male toons in the future, I could see myself choosing Troll, Blood Elf, Dwarf, or more Tauren.

I only play female characters. I dunno, I think it's cause we've gotten very used to the aesthetics of the exaggerated female form through popular media, but not so much the male form as they made it in WoW. I keep trying to create male characters, and they just... don't do anything for me. Maybe it's just that I'm a woman and related better to female characters. *shrug* I always overthink things.

Being female myself, I prefer female toons. For some odd reason, on my one male toon I find myself trying to sound like a guy while talking in chat. I have no idea why. However, it has been bothering me less as I play him more.

Currently, I have a ratio of around 60:40 in favor of males. I think it was more because I got tired of moving and restarting all over in a new server that I just made mostly male characters in Aman'Thul. If only my current server is considered, I have 4:1, in favor of the males.

I've weighed in on this several times already, buuuuut....

Kallimon is my only male toon. I identify with my women much more strongly and I don't like having to think of "myself" as male, since I'm...not. xD That said, I don't see Kallimon being my only male toon in the long run, but he's definitely an exception rather than the rule. I prefer having tomboyish female characters because if I decide to, say, tame a blue moth, it would come off better than on a male character...*cough*

I am consciously more aware of trying to sound more male on Kallimon, but I know I've done the same thing on my ladies, except in those cases, I'd been letting people think I was a guy playing a female toon. It's weird, but somehow, that can earn you more respect. >_<

I prefer to stick with female toons as they are my gender but I did have a male toon once a long while back when I was still class hopping after joining WoW. (I think he was a male tauren druid.. could be wrong though.) :)

I've got some peculiarities about toons I can't even understand. I'm a female (human, they tell me) and I will never, ever play one in WoW. I've tried and not got past level 15, apart from the beta testing days when I think I managed 19. Human males are fine, if they're in a dress. My two highest casters (Warlock and Mage) are human males. So are my two little Priests.

Night Elf males are fine and funky: have four of those. Night Elf female are super, have two of those. Same goes for Taurens and Trolls, although I haven't played much on the Horde Side. I think I could play either sex of Undead in any role as well.

Draenei: female only, but that's because I have a RL life friend who used to play rugby (built like a brick privy) and all I see is his face superimposed on the males. I had to reroll to a female for that reason: I couldn't play a "Dave". I tend not to like the Draenei in caster roles/gear.

Dwarves: love, love, love the ladies. Have four of those. Thought I'd love the males, but can't play the one I've got. He's so inferior to the femmes, I'd sex-swap him in a minute were it not for the cost.

Gnomes, Orcs and Blood Elves: no, nay, never, regardless of sex.

Yes, I admit it, I play female chars whilst I myself am a male.

But tbh I tend to play the model that suits me best for the job I have to do. I play a human female protadin because the way they hold sword and shield whilst they're fighting makes sense to me. You know, with the shield in FRONT of them where it belongs.

DK's tend to wield 2 handers, and N elf females have one of the best animations with 2 handers. Very samurai-like.

Dranei females have that awsome 'shotgun' animation whilst firing guns and xbows. That's why my main hunter is a dranei female.

Well that and I just find Dranei girls adorable... sue me ;)

I'm female and I've dabbled in the male side but so far, only like male Draenei, Tauren and Trolls though I've only kept the Troll in the longshot.

Male in RL here. I rolled male toons exclusively until about 8 months ago, when some guild mates and other ingame friends decided to create a guild made up solely of pink haired female DK gnomes. I have since created a few female toons (on the same realm as my female DK). My first few WoW toons were all male NE (like the Shadowmeld racial - saved my butt in so many situations). My first toon is currently sitting at 59, while I now have 5 toons above him (4 80's and a 61).

Btw, just yesterday I made 80 on my pink haired Gnome (pushed so as not to miss the meta Fools and Lunar achievements and have to wait another whole year to get me a violet proto-drake :)

So, in a nut shell, I have about 25 toons on four servers (my Petopians toon is a male Troll (lvl 2) --- solicit invite still to be done). I would say 90% of my toons are male.

I am seriously considering spinning a 2nd account when Cata comes out. I don't want to shelve any of my toons on one realm where I have all 10 slotted. I tend to create toons so as to have all primary proffessions covered, lol. If I do spin a 2nd account, I will be using the account to create opposite faction toons on the same servers (except for the one extra worgen -- will make 11 Alliance on the same realm).

I play male and female toons. Just whatever strikes me as better at the time of rolling the toon.

I'm female, and all of my characters are female. There's a few reasons. I don't actively rp in wow, but was an rp'er in the past, and the mindset sticks. I identify with female characters better. Also, I dabble in art, and I have much more practice drawing the female form. Female toons allows me to draw my characters! (i fail at drawing men- they either look sissified, or like chunky hulks).

I would have one or two male characters, if I found the ones offered in the game more attractive to look at. I play alliance, and find the octopus look of male draenei creepy, gnomes are just silly, i dont care for dwarves.. That leaves night elves and humans. I dislike the "angry" or "contorted" look of most of the male faces. My character isnt angry all the time! lol. Also, Im not a fan of the perma-sideburns on the NE males...

So, thats my character explanation! Now, pets are another story. I have both male and female pets.

I roll guys mostly. I've done a few girls, but theres always that wierdness that ensues when some noob starts flirting with you. Its funny. I, too, enjoy toons with the best animations regardless of gender, but its just so much more natural for me to play a guy toon. I've rolled about 2 or 3 toons to level cap but when I raid I prefer the guy characters.

Anyone else roll up wowmodelviewer, pick out a gear set w/badass weapon and start trolling through the animations to compare how each char looks doing what?
I don't really feel like this is so much the "Post-Modern" era as much as its the "Pre-Zombie-Apocalpse" era. I consider myself more of a forward thinking guy and an era that just won't die is just as feasible as a coming era, where the dead come back.

I'm male, and pretty much exclusively roll female toons.

Its not because I'm a perv (although I am) , I just can't stand any of the male models except for the blood elves. They're either too bulky, or have just weird animations. It does confuse a lot of people when I finally tell them that I'm a dude, but they get used to it.
This is pretty much me. I joke that I'm a gay guy so I can relate to both sides, but I still feel a little worried people might react badly. Some of it is about roleplay, too. The reason for my male Night Elf is (besides the rugged features) is he's supposed to be the big brother of my hunter. My fiance plays like this too though he has no male toons.

Edited to add: I'm a sucker for the Night Elf female bouncing animation. Hardcore hunter that randomly acts like a little girl. Awesome.

I prefer to play males as a rule. My first character on WoW was a female Night Elf Hunter on Feathermoon (RP server). I was hit on ALL THE TIME. It was funny at first, but then it became annoying. I just play males now so there is no confusion, and I like my Blood Elf hunter animations :D
