Which pet family is most in need of a new model?

Unread post by Chin Music »

Every expansion along with new families, a few of the existing ones get a new set of model skins to bring them up to the graphical standards of the expansion. In Burning Crusade there were new Raptors, Windserpents, etc. In Wrath there were new Wolves and Birds of Prey. In Cataclysm there are new Crabs, Crocolisks and a few others.

But there are still some families still relying on ancient vanilla models. Which one do you reckon should get a new set of facelifted models next? Imo, bears are in the greatest need.

Hyenas. It wouldn't fix the model, but it'd fix a few issues.

Most dire need; Sporebats. There can't just be 3 separate species.

Followed by Devilsaurs who practically get no love. One's brown like poo, one's a hideous black and blue, one's a ridiculous white and magenta, and the other's a neon vomit green. Less horrid colors and updated models please!

Finally, a better model for the Springpaw Lynx. Even with Anti-Aliasing maxed, it's still got jaggies everywhere and looks horribly low res. Make it share models with the night elf druid forms like it used to.

Hyenas, bears, and bats. The latter two won't be much of a challenge even; they could make new bear models based off the riding bear models (base models of the riding bears that don't have the armor on them already exist), and new bat models based off the troll druid flight form.

I'd be more inclined to tame a Hyena if they'd fix up their model. =(

What about more Sporebat skins? =D

I am personally on the bear bandwagon. Although hyena's need fixing, the actual look of them seems fitting. Clean them up and they would look nice. (as far as hyena's looking nice that is)

Bats would be an awesome if they added some that looked like a fruit bat xD

Bats need some love. :( Both an update to the current skins and some new model/body types would be splendid.

Bats

While this feature of the Grimtotem Spirit Guide wasn't exactly intended... - it will still be possible in future for everyone who wishes to tame this NPC to do so

Hyenas and Bears are my top picks. We did get Arcturis and what-not, but even so...looking at him, he's still the old bear "model" in a sense. And hyenas never did get anything for them at all so far, other then getting kicked out of Scarlet Monastery. I think bears need to look more...majestic really. Right now to me, even though I like bears they just seem sorta "Herpadurp" to me. As for Hyenas...Im thinking something a little more crazed like. Crazy eyes, drool, a little more ragged looking. Even a more detailed flea effect for the really raggedy looking ones. lol. (edit. Undead Hyena. That'd be so epic.)

My third choice would be Bats, and fouth would be Tallstriders. I like Devilsaurs and Sporebats as they are now really. But having a new Bat would be awesome, and more detail on the tallstriders would be great as well. Maybe some bats that look more Vamperic with bigger fangs and some red glowing eyes (Or even an ALL black bat.), maybe some of the tallstriders get some new colorful plumage to attract mates. So on and so forth.

Personally I think bears need a more menacing look, the current ones are way too cute =P.

Bats and bears.

The current bear model suffers from the "perma combat stance" Blizzard uses to simplify creature movements, e.g. the idea being to give it a crouch that lends itself (at least somewhat) as a default posture to both normal movement and combat, thereby reducing the amount of animations needed.

With cats (for example) this approach works because cats are generally sinuous and slinky. But with bears it makes them stick their very sizable hind end up in the air resulting in a look that is more "D'awwwww he's so CUTE!" than the awe inspiring savagery they are known for IRL (once they decide to fight that is).

IRL bears lurch along with fore legs at full or nearly full extension, causing their shoulders to be at least as high as their hips (or quite a bit higher in the case of grizzlies), which by itself looks impressive. In combat, they don't tend to crouch down unless it's to get at something down on the ground, otherwise they tend to retain the stiff legged posture as they like to attack downward using their height and weight for leverage. There is no need for them to be crouching in combat or otherwise.

In re: bats... I'm not sure exactly what it is about them that I find offputting other than perhaps the fact that their wings seem more like a couple plywood boards than leathery, jointed skin membranes...
