Hunting Bugs: King to Knight

Unread post by Melentari »

I'm really surprising myself with how much fun I'm having with these challenges I've given myself.

Highwing had quite a way to go between her last tame, Curious, and this one. Level 19 and level 47 are quite a distance apart, after all, but the moment I dinged, I went looking for this fantastic little scorpid and I found one not far away. Meet Alloy:

Image

This guy even looks like a tank. I've been having a whole lot of fun kicking around with him. I almost named him Anklechaser, but then I thought of Alloy and it suited even better. I can't believe how pretty the skin is. A mix of wood and metal, thus the name. I really think I chose a winner.

Image

Hopefully he'll help out next time I random into a really fail Zul'Farrak. I tamed an in-dungeon beetle to help tank last time since our tank couldn't hold aggro in the least. I like that his skill isn't a pin but a disarm. The only thing I don't really like about him is some of the facial details, and I really think that he needs some kind of poison attack since he is a scorpid.

Image

I've even managed to fall in love with his claw-waving dance - if that wasn't what won me over. There are some weird creases in his tail where the skin from the back of his carapace shows through, and there are a couple of clipping issues in his claws, but I still like him overall.

Now that Highwing is 47, she has some interesting camps ahead. Here's hoping she can find Rekk'tilac at 48. And at 56, I get to try to find Rex Ashil. *rubs hands together* Not to mention the bug minipets! >.> I've got some work ahead of me.

Edit: Rekk'tilac is mine! Check the latest post for screenshots. (:

Edit 2: Highwing has saved a beetle. Screenshots below!

Edit 3: Recruiting the king of Hive'ashi.

If you like scorpids, Madexx is a lovely one you'll be able to get at lvl 84.

Oh yes. I'm planning on Highwing getting one of the Madexxes - and I'm leaning toward red, but I might just settle for whichever she manages to find. (Even if I hope in my heart that it's the red one.)

On my server, for the past well, at least a month, its been nothing but green. Sadly, its a crapshoot. It took me 7 months to get blue, which is the color my heart was set on.

Oh yes, I've read your posts where you were hoping so hard for your blue Madexx and you seriously have my sympathy. I had to camp forever on my main to get Gondria and I've still never even seen Arcturis or Skoll in the wild. They show up when and how they want to, these rares, and we all just get to hope the RNG goes our way even when it gets frustrating. That's one of the reasons why I'm trying to condition myself into hoping I can be happy with whichever Madexx I can find, even if it's not the one I really want.

Well, if green or bronze appear, be happy. They're two lovely colors too. Blue is of course MY favorite. And I'm hoping red will appear for you. Anything but black, honestly. I loathe black. As for seeing Arcturis in the wild, I've only seen him up twice in 2 years. Skoll is up a lot, but ends up killed by lowbies for the loot. Poor wolfie. =(

Thank you for the well wishes. I hope your next camp goes well, too. And who knows, maybe Highwing will get to spot those two out in the wild while I level her. It'd be a first, and firsts are always neat.

Re: Hunting Bugs: Lava spider edition!

Unread post by Melentari »

So today, upon dinging 48, I took Highwing to look for Rekk'tilac. When we first arrived, there was nothing to see but some of Rekk's smaller cousins hanging around.

Image

I headed south toward Blackrock Mountain and logged over to another hunter to level for a while, but then I just got a feeling. So I changed servers, logged back in as Highwing, and look who was waiting for me in the distance!

Image

I dismissed Alloy in a hurry, scooted as close as I dared, planted a trap and started to tame.

Image

He got a hit in before he triggered the trap and became a lava spider on the rocks. Look how huge he is compared to one of the other lava spiders in the background!

Image

But as soon as the tame went through, he shrank by an epic proportion.

Image

I'd been looking at the lava spiders for a while earlier, when hoping Rekk would spawn, so here's what I noticed about them. (Rex posed for screenshots for this portion of my post.)

1: They look really neat from above. The markings on their legs give them the appearance of being marked with concentric rings, but as they shift their legs, the shape shifts with it. I could watch him idle all day.

Image

2: The dark edges that look great zoomed out? Don't look so great zoomed in. It disappoints me a little, just how low-res this skin is.

Image

3: He really looks stunningly cuddly for a spider of fiery doom. He's all cute, and for some reason, I keep imagining him as a spider who should drop one of those Crystalline Tears of Loyalty. I didn't think I'd like the tarantula model, but he just feels like a spider waiting to be a companion to someone who appreciates him.

Image

He's got a place beside Curious in Highwing's stable, now. :D

I think green Madexx would look great with your hunter, but I understand your interest in red.

Red is really my most cherished <3

@Novikova: Thank you! I was hoping so much I'd get him!

@Lovelle: When I was looking at Madexx skins, there was just something about the red one. Maybe the purple eyes...

I agree, I think the purple eyes make the red look stunning. Its my favorite of the choices. Blue almost ties, but there is something about the red that just makes it stand out more (IMO of course)

Re: Hunting Bugs: Big Bad Beetle Runt?

Unread post by Melentari »

@Serenith: He just looks so cool, the red one - but I'll deal with whichever one I find. I know how looking for one specific Madexx can be such a trial.

@Vephriel: You were the inspiration for me taming him! Now he's got all sorts of buggy little friends. XD

But I've been taming in the interim! Here's the story, RP style.

Highwing was down in Un'Goro crater where she'd heard about a silithid hive. She'd wondered about silithids since finding them in Thousand Needles and the two big nests in Tanaris. Just like all other bugs, these silithids managed to live in all sorts of environments. Underwater where the Needles had flooded, in the heat and dry of the desert -- and now, here they were in the lush jungle. She carefully sneaked past the sentries until she stood at the entrance of the burrow. And there, unexpectedly, she found a silithid beetle, slightly smaller than the others. He worked at the side of the burrow like a beetle determined, undistracted until she started offering bits of banana she'd kept from Gadgetzan.

"Hey there," Highwing murmured, pressing herself toward the burrow's walls. "Come here. Come here, little guy."

When the beetle realised she was offering food - which, unknown to the huntress, he'd been without for a very long time - it was almost an immediate loyalty shift. He devoured the banana and lifted his feelers up toward her, seeking more. She chuckled and fed him, emptying her pack of bananas until the little beetle seemed sated.

Image

She still had to go into the hive. From what she understood, there was a large danger to the Marshall camp inside, and she'd been tasked with seeing to it in whatever way she could. It was work she was confident she could do.

As she stood, the beetle came to stand at her side and stayed there until she actually set foot inside. As if afraid, he hung back, leaving her to face the larger silithids inside - and that was when Highwing understood. He was smaller than they were.

Image

And almost immediately, Highwing was attacked. She fired arrows into her attackers, fighting them off with her staff, but they came in numbers that were very close to overwhelming. But then, to her surprise, the little beetle stormed in, absorbing their poisonous attacks - attacks that he was almost immune to. Before their combined efforts, the wave of attackers began to fall.

Image

In the peace that followed, even surrounded by corpses, Highwing led them a short distance away before turning to speak to the little beetle, a hand on his shining, smooth chitin. "Listen," she said softly. "I know they've been mistreating you, what with your being small. But I can promise that with me, if you're injured, you'll be healed. Your strength will be appreciated. I'll feed you, take care of you - but we'll need to see to it that the threat against the expeditions here is fallen. You know the way inside here. Can you show me?"

The beetle's eyes seemed to shine and then, on his little pointed feet, he started to lead her further down, through the coils of the hive, until they came face to proboscis with the Colossus that had been pressing the hive to action.

Image

It intimidated even the huntress, but before she could stop him, the little beetle charged forward. They fought, dodging the beast's poison, but the bravery of the little beetle was astonishing. In the end, the colossus had fallen and though scratched and injured, the beetle runt stood victorious.

They left the hive behind, none of the silithids daring to stop them, and Highwing was confident of her new beetle friend. (But his colour still got him the name Buttercup which he actually seemed quite content with.)

Re: Hunting Bugs: King to Knight

Unread post by Melentari »

When I first started playing on my main server, the level cap was 70. I was very new to the game, had no idea what I was doing, but I quickly found and latched onto a Night Elf hunter named Caedes. He was a great player, had PvPed until he had the title of Knight, and I had stars in my eyes because, to me, he was awesome.

Since then, he's transferred off the server and I've not seen or heard from him since, but from time to time, I still remember him. He always wore a pair of Fel Edged Battleaxes which sheathed on his back and reminded me of butterfly wings. And that, as well of his prowess, inspired me to go hunting for a specific pet.

I was down in Silithus, questing away, when I finally dinged 56, and that heralded the start of my camp in Hive'ashi. I cleared the hive time after time, spiralling in and out and killing everything killable (and mining plenty of Thorium). After a while, though, I logged out to give my eyes a rest. Luck had me logging back in right in time.

Image

This big, beautiful beast is the only black wasp in the game and from the moment I saw him on the page, I wanted him beside my hunter. After killing some mobs between me and him, I planted my trap at the mouth to the tunnel and pulled him in to be tamed.

Image

He's another of those pets where I feel terrible about how much he shrinks. From that huge majesty, he shrank to a point where--

Image

Okay, no, he isn't that small. The moth is just a lot closer than he is, and angle was working against him. (But that moth is getting insistent about being in screenshots.) He did shrink quite a lot, though, but even at the smaller size, he's still beautiful. The smooth, black colouring really makes him look sleek and deadly and worthy of his name.

Image

Caedes, once Rex of Hive'ashi, is now the Knight of Highwing's stables. And just like the character who inspired his name, he has a striking pair of wings on his back.

Image

Caedes - Latin, meaning to cut, hew, cut down, fell, cut off, cut to pieces; smiting, killing, slaughter, massacre, carnage, esp. in battle or by an assassin. Appropriate for such a sleek, black creature.
