Ah, you have a good point there! There are some awful ones. And lots of plain dumb ones.

I wouldn't normally /ignore someone because of their name. It would have to be extreme. But if their name conveys to me that they're an attention-seeking dick then I'm less likely to be helpful to them, res them (on my shammy) etc.

One thing I wanted to give my opinion on, however... it seems common to trivialize messages and names as "just words", which I think misses the point. People don't get upset at words, they get upset at intent. And we convey intent in our words. People aren't generally upset at derogatory words, they're upset because there is a person behind the words who is going out of their way to try to cause annoyance or misery.

I did put a druid on ignore when I was on the horde side once. I did not even know the person, but with a name like colon cancer, I should have reported the name too, it really was just not cool. :?

I dont ignore people with bad/offensive names, I "report" them. I only tend to ignore people who are not worth my time reading what they have to say (ie, the asshats and other drudges of wow society)

I both report and ignore them, but sometimes i ponder if its of any use to report them.. i do hope soo....

The main reason that i ignore them is that, as i sad, that i accually feel sick and really sitrubed in rl when i see a name which offends God, Christ etc. When i ignore them i can be sertain that i will never ever see them again :D

I tend to report over ignore.

There was this dark skinned human male priest on my realm named "Niguhhealuh" pretty obvs what it meant. He had quite the attitude too.

People can say how words are just words and so on, and if you're just passing through and not likely to hear the idiot again, then yeah why bother - but for those you are stuck with, that statement rings hollow.

I mean if your neighbor across the street spraypainted the words "F--- YOU <yourname>, YOU ^%$&# PIECE OF %^&$ AND YOUR MOTHER TOO, LOL", are you honestly going to have no reaction? Of course you are - we're all human, and even though it's sort of uncool to admit it to strangers, we all have feelings, and just because someone is a crude, angry imbecile we're still going to mind (on some level, if only the subconscious) if they attack us verbally or in writing, no matter how clumsy the attack may be.

Which is not to say anyone "has to" report or /ignore, but don't hold back from doing so just because you think it doesn't work, or that it's "weak"; reporting does work - I've seen plenty of firsthand accounts of people who got themselves a warning, temporary ban or etc due to offensive language in-game... sure not every one sticks, but if no one speaks up then Blizzard will not know there is a problem in the first place. :)

I do not report people for their names or put them on ignore. I do get offended when I see people use Christ's name in vain in the game with their characters names; however, it's no better than trade chat sometimes with it's slander toward Christ. The ONLY time I have reported a player for their name is a fellow guidie and he really wanted a free name change so he asked a lot of us to report his characters names as offensive.

I won't leave a dungeon over a name (I'm perpetually dps, and I'm not fond of 30m-hour long queues), but if it's racially or sexually explicit/offensive, I'll report and ignore.

If it's just stupid, I mock them loudly to my guildmates in /gchat. >.>

To be fair, I've never run into the same player from a different realm in a pug more than once (maybe twice if I requeue immediately after leaving a dungeon and so does the other person) so I'm not entirely sure how much it's worth actually ignoring someone you don't approve of. I -have- done it a few times, but more because the person was an intractable ass-doobie, or else heinously terrible at their job.

someday I'll find someplace to host a sig that isn't stupid money-grubbing photobucket

I believe you can ignore people in the dungeon finder to keep from getting grouped with them, but I might be wrong.

You can ignore ppl in pugs from other realm, just right click and choose ignore. At least I know it's worked for me in the past, although I almost never do that.

I report and /ignore people who have homophobic or sexist names for their pets or themselves.
I report and /ignore people who start spamming offensive or judgmental religious stuff in /trade chat.
I report and /ignore people who use "gay" or "ghey" or any other form of that word as a synonym for "bad".
I report and /ignore people who participate in the whole "anal" thing.
I report and /ignore people who participate in the whole "gay bar" thing.
And generally speaking, I'll just slap an /ignore on people who have all-around douchey names.

I'm not intolerant.
I am playing a game that is meant to be fun for me and a means of escape. It's not a place I want to see humanity show itself under its worst possible light.

A bit of palindromic wisdom:

I love pets - combat or non.

CHEERS TO THAT.

I left WoW for a time b/c of the intense levels of harassing happening from tons of different players. You know, the trolls that think trolling means abuse. Then one day, I realized, I shall ignore all who are crude! (reporting I reserve for those who think they're trolling but they're actually being abusive)

Boy my attitude has gotten better since starting that trend. Far more relaxed, ftw! :D

Cross realm ignores are my favourite thing EVER

I'm always leery of the offensively named toons and pets... it usually ends in an ignore b/c they're TRYING to upset people from the git-go

Never really thought of pet names, I hardly every get teamed up with other hunters, so its not usually a big deal. I'm (almost) always on a hunter when I play, my poor druid and shaman are so under used these days. When I'm on my active non-hunter, a shadow priest, I'm usually too busy being uber critical of most of the hunter's play style that I'm not pay attention to their pet's names. I don't know why I get so critical of other hunters I stumble across, but if my shadow preist-whom I barely know how to play is outdoing a hunter in an instance, that hunter is doing something wrong!

On the pet names, though, I've never even really thought about those. My main toon has a basic little black wolf named Hel-the name comes from the hell I put that poor wolf through when I first started raiding as a MM in WOTLK and he was my only non-exotic pet when we could only have five pets total (BM was my main spec outside of raiding back then). My other hunters all make the trek and go pick up a version of that little guy in tribute, and they all end up with names related to it, though most are more mythological then religious, Hades, Styx, Keres, Yomi, etc. I don't think they are offensive names personally, but I could see someone getting upset, perhaps, by Hel. That doesn't mean I'm going to go and change his name-I've had that guy on my main since I started playing, never had anyone complain about him. And I don't think it is nearly as offensive as some of the things I've seen in game.

^This though I didn't know and am pretty happy to learn about. I've been unfortunate in some LFR groups to get teamed up with people that make me drop the raid, even when I despise waiting for a que. Good to know I can ignore them instead.

I just reported an EXTREMELY offensive name of a poor cat the other day. I don't see too many offensive player names but when I do I report them, mostly if they're crude or sexual. I really can't believe the "names" some people use. Especially with pets! It's quite ridiculous.

Last time I reported someone, I looked them up on the armory, and not long after I spoke with the GM, the character was gone. It's good to know that they're actually doing something about it. :)

It takes a lot to offend me. That said, if a name actually does offend me (like say its racist or extremely derogatory), then I will report it. But if its just gross/stupid/mean, I'll probably ignore it. I only report the thing I find extremely offensive in a 'universal' (or at least, almost universal) sense.

If that made any sense XD
