Kitty woes
But now, it seems like all of a sudden she's gone back to hating him. Any time he approaches her, she goes back to growling and hissing. She scratched him on the nose today while we were gone. We left him out all night last night, and Jon said he only heard her hiss once or twice (I can sleep through anything).
Should we go back to putting him in his room during the day and at night, or is this pretty typical of cat behavior? It's only been a month, so I'm not sure if she should be totally accepting of him by now, or if it just takes a while. I know it can vary from cat to cat. Neither cat is hostile or vicious towards the other. He just wants to play with her, and she evidently doesn't like it. He'll eventually get the hint and leave her alone. For the most part, they avoid one another, but like I said, sometimes he just really wants to play and she wants nothing to do with him.
I'm just so afraid that she's going to be like this forever, and that I'll always worry about them tearing each other to bits while we're gone.
As far as Mia is concerned, she was the only cat for about three years, but shared the house with another dog. So yeah, she's used to being the only kitty. And if she ever saw a cat outside, she'd sit at the window and be all upset.
And as I type this, Skye just went up to the chair she was sitting on to try to bat at her, and now she's growling and hissing again. He turned and walked away. It's just strange seeing her be so mean. She's so sweet to us, and then it's like a completely different cat around him.
I wanted to do this the right way, and it seemed to be going well for a while, but now.....I don't know.

Re: Kitty woes
It sounds like she's just like my Fea was. Imo if you're really really worried about what will happen while youre asleep/not around. Id keep them separate during those times.
Personally I'd like them settle it on their own. Eventually he'll learn not to harass her and it shouldn't really be a problem.
If thats confusing Im sorry xD Its really late and Im tired, but Im up practicing a song I have to sing tomorrow lol.

Re: Kitty woes

I just really don't want to have to give him back to the shelter. I already had to give my doggy away for several reasons (she is with a wonderful older lady now). I don't want to have to give Skye away, too. I really love him and he's helped fill the void my dog left behind. If I had to give away another pet now, I think it would devastate me.

I'll just keep hoping that she'll lighten up in a few months but if not, at least she tolerates him for the most part.

Re: Kitty woes
We have two females, our older one (Nala) was the only one for half a year, then we got our younger one (Flora). Nala was very pissed at us for getting a new cat and she was hissing and hitting Flora while Flora was a silly little girl and needed to understand when Nala wanted to keep her distance. They got used to each other after about 2 weeks and now we have them since over 1 1/2 year togher, but there are still days they chase each other and hiss. Flora regularely gets scratched on the nose because she still doesn't always accept when Nala is sleeping and wants to be left alone. It got a lot better with Nala's aggresive behavior at the beginning when we ignored the little one and told her she was the best and such things. She needed to be shown that we didn't exchange her and she was still our number one. To give Flora a way to control her energy better we play with her a lot more than with Nala (who really doesn't like playing much) especially in the evenings so she will be calmer during the night because she is exhausted after playing with us. It took almost half a year for both cats to get so used to each other they started grooming each other and sleep next to each other without hissing/fighting. I don't think we could seperate them again by now.
Cats need to sort out their differences alone, I don't think it will help putting one away, it will only postpone the fight. It's normal for cats to test their rank again every once in a while. So it might be they change positions they newer one to boss and the other way round. I think it's important to give each cat time alone with "her/his" human so they'll see they both get love. We play with Flora when Nala is sleeping or in the other room, Nala gets cuddles when Flora is sleeping. Also Flora is more like my cat and Nala more my fiance's. If you can see such a development it will help with giving each cat attention if they are drawn towards different people and won't be offended if you take care of only one of them as long as the other person gives his/her cat the same amount of attention.
Sorry if it sounds a bit confusing, but it's hard for me to explain such complex situations in English

Re: Kitty woes
Namecalling and yelling happen. I have five cats, and while I've separated new additions for a day or so when I first got them, it was more to make sure they were healthy than to avoid conflict. The only problems happen when one of them decides to get mad at YOU for the situation and starts doing things like anger-peeing on your bed or shoes or whatnot, in which case you have a problem. But as long as it doesn't escalate that far, the squabbling will eventually calm down. It usually takes a couple of weeks.
Hell, two of mine love each other dearly and run around the house playing, but it's interspersed with head chewing and all manner of squalling. It's just how they roll with each other.
someday I'll find someplace to host a sig that isn't stupid money-grubbing photobucket

Re: Kitty woes
Hopefully things will settle down a bit. He hasn't gotten any fresh scratches lately, so maybe he's learning to keep his distance a little more. She doesn't mind him walking by her, as long as he's not walking to her.
