Merida from Brave to be the Next Disney Princess..

Unread post by Silivren »

So that's good right? Merida could be a good role model for young girls. She's realistic and relatable. Theres a petition online, which I have signed however because to make her the next Disney Princess..well Disney did THIS to her.

Image

Now I'm sorry but what the hell!? Merida looks fine as she is.. WHY change her?????? I get they want to appeal to the masses but that petition has about 19,000 signatures and I think THOSE are the masses.

Yeah I'm not thrilled about the way they want to showcase her because, imo, it's not Merida anymore. Her whole struggle in the movie was not wanting to conform to the stereotypical princess look and behavior and I feel like Disney changing her (they also made her waist smaller and gave her bigger boobs supposedly) defeats the reason many women and girls love her. Merida is perfect just the way she is in her movie.

Exactly. She doesn't care about pretty dresses and stuff like that.. They're putting the idea forward that "It's better to be pretty than brave." At least in my opinion. She's got bigger more seductive eyes and a thinner face too and I believe shes wearing make-up.

I saw this earlier, it makes me endlessly angry. They ignored everything about her that makes her the character she is. :-/ The ultra-thin "ideal" body shape ignores how her thicker, less shapely body was due to her youth and lack of care- she wouldn't look like that, at her age. And they REMOVED HER BOW. The most important item she has, and she doesn't even carry it anymore. The weapon she could prove herself through. Her bow. Not only that, they made her hair into soft wavy curls, not the ringlets that it took so many years to animate. And finally, her belt that carried arrows was replaced with a "I just won the beauty pageant" sash with a flowy piece of fabric- really?!

I really, really have strong feelings about this. -.- Merida was the princess that broke the mold, so they broke her character to make her fit again. Great message to send to the kids, that one.

On the bright side, her face character more accurately resembles her true self:

Good old Disney doing what they do best. I'm not happy even tho I hated the movie for many reasons. Still not signing the petition as it's Disney and they wont change no matter how much people complain.

@ Lupis - I know. I cant STAND it. I absolutely loved the movie myself and then...they do this to her. I loved how she broke the mold and I adore her crazy hair. Its what makes Merida.. well Merida.

@ Tyger - That's a relief at least. I adore that they have her riding Angus :D

@ Cow - I'm really hoping they change it. I know there's a slim chance but I'm really praying that they see how many people HATE this and change her back. Merida is my favorite Disney female of all because she's the only one I can identify with.

A online petition wont do anything at all. Not to a company as big as Disney. No if you really want them to care to hell even look you need to stop buying their stuff. Get enough people to stop buying their products and they'll listen and honestly the amount who've signed that petition is tiny. :/ You'd need way more. It's all about the money, stop that and they will care.

They even got the horse right, there. I greatly approve of her face character. I just wish the new toy version would look like that.

I agree. I think the toy version will come out looking like the prototype pictures that have been posted and that just makes me sad. Like Doctress I identify most closely with Merida.

Bummer. Totally not digging the change. I know a lot of moms were excited there was a princess who DIDN'T need Prince Charming and took charge of her own destiny. She also didn't fit the usual 'perfect hair, perfect skin, totes skinny but totally curvy!' stereotype.

Is there a figure of the horse? Cause id totally buy that over the princess doll of her lol! I liked the movie but thought it would be more about "her" than her mother turning into a bear...I was abit let down by that. And yeah why change her? Silly american ideals of beauty.

Disney hasn't done it for me for awhile to be honest, Studio Ghibli has my heart <3

It was going to be called "The bear and the bow" but was changed when the lady who was directing it left and the new person changed it. I think the first name would of suited the movie more.

Honestly, the whole "Disney Princess" line is really just a Disney cash cow. All it's for is to milk out tons of money for them because hey, why not? So when a Princess from a recent movie ends up being popular, they toss her in with the rest of them. Of course, instead of making them unique, they all make them look the same, thus destroying any unique personality the character had. Hey, I guess being a Disney Princess you gotta have standards in order to bring in the cash!

...Yeah.

NEW SIGNATURE PENDING... SOON.

I'm not really surprised. Disney just doesn't seem to want to market strong, tough, independent female characters. When it comes to toys, they want 'em to all be the mostly-helpless princess who has to be rescued by some prince. Merida in the movie just isn't 'princess' material by Disney's standard. The new version really seems to discard all the elements that made her an appealing character in the first place.

Fear not!! Disney removed her. She will stay the same Merida. Thank God. The public backlash was so huge they couldn't ignore it would seem.

A few facts. Last I checked. Even from my families' history .............. Scotts didn't have kings (they were actually called Monarchs). Which would mean no princesses. So she should have NEVER been put in the "princess" category.

That's beside the point. I personally, like many others, loved Merida because I could identify with her 100%. Her independence, courage, tenacity. Even down to the dislike of girly things. I even have a bow that was handed down to me.

So greatful Disney looked past their pockets for a change and responded to public outcry.

Um you do know A king is a monarch right? Scotland has had kings, lots of them. One of the most famous was King James (King of Scotland as James VI and King of England and Ireland as James I)

Sorry but I never grew up hearing my grandmother, great grandparents talk of kings EVER when it came to clan rulers. They were called monarchs. Shame you had to ruin all I was taught to prove yourself correct because that's what wikipedia said. Wow.
“I think Disney is sending mixed messages here, because it’s trying to appeal to both sides of the equation,”

And this is it right here. From the yahoo article. Disney is trying save face and still earn that coin. Another shame.
