I don't really see a problem with first names being said on the net. My name is Carrie. Yes, like the movie/book, and Yes, my prom was completely normal.

I've got no nicknames with my real name, which is a little sad. I'll react to Bar, Cosis, Iocha, Akira, Akiralios, Kira (Watashi wa Kira desu *red eyed grin*), As, Asli, Asliasa, or Bane. A lot I know, and alllll from my toons. That's slightly depressing now that I think about it.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I've been called Kira (*evil grin, again*) so much that I respond to that as much as my real name...which makes it odd when I watch Death Note. So feel free to call me Kira!

Never bothered but I don't like my real name that much, most of my friends call me by nicknames.
Around the EU guild I'm always called something like Sili, Silly, Sonnie (reserved for Saturo, only she can call me this!), Klari (if I play with my warlock) or just plain Sonata. Depends on characters really.

Saf calls me multiple things, which range from Bear butt to beyond but this is because she knows me personaly that I respond to anything she says...I just somehow know she's talking to me.

Just to be very clear, I would never ask anyone here to use any name that they were not comfortable using.

Everyone here is free to share their real name if they wish, and I don't mind people knowing my first name because I have mentioned it before. But you shouldn't take me responding to this topic as any sort of endorsement of the idea that you need to share your real name. I, for example, am not at all sanguine about sharing my last name - not because I don't trust you but because I don't need anonymous lurkers showing up on my professional blog. *grin*

I will call you (person reading this, not just Sochi) whatever you prefer, and my default assumption is that you've chosen the forum name you'd prefer to be called by. (If that's not true, you should PM me and we'll get you changed if possible.)

My actual name is Krista, but I'm so rarely called by it that I sometimes look at people like their crazy when I hear it. My best friend and sister in law calls me Kyo(short for Kyonarai). It's pronounced Key on-ar ay by the way. I use that name everywhere on the internet and am so far the only one on wow to use it. It was originally the name of my fan char for Inuyasha.

My husband calls me Kitty(he spells it kitteh) in retaliation for me changing his name to Cheetah(I say it more like Cheh-ta though). I started calling him that when we were dating and it's stuck ever since. In my defense, he's tall, runs fast, and has fluffy hair. He also has the same slight dent in his forhead that cheetahs do. Plus, he says I'm very cat-like.

My guild on WoW is apparently incapable of pronouncing Kyonarai, so they call me Cake. Go figure.

I think it's nice that people feel familiar and comfortable enough in this place to share this, I really do. I just have to say, I'm going to forget. First of all, I'm completely used to all your usernames (changing avatars or siggies confuses the crap outta me, I'm so used to linking an avatar with a user name!) and secondly, I suck at remembering names. Remember those games from camp that were used to introduce everyone? You had to say your name and everyone previously or toss the ball and call out the name of the person, stuff like that? Yeah, I sucked at those. Just sayin'. ;)

@Sarayana
Believe me most people do have hard times remembering names, takes me a few days to remember names also. Teachers have tons of trouble remembering names because there are so many people they need to remember.

But I give nicknames to others so I remember them better, like I call Saturo, Sat sometimes or Vephriel, Veph.
And to me nicknames make me feel a little closer to the person, hence why my friends seldomly call me by my full name...if they do, it makes me feel well to be honest distant to them and even my parent calls me by my nickname most of the time.

But once people get to know eachother better nicknames are bound to arise sometimes!

First of all, I must say I adore your nickname! Yay for Suicune! *Hugs her Suicune plushie* <3

Anywho.. I, oddly enough considering how paranoid I get at times, don't mind using my first name for things like this. Heck, thanks to my username, I'm called by my first name on the forums anyway! (Yes, my name IS Senna XD)

I do have a bazillion nicknames that I do go by online a lot. Well, not a bazillion, but a few XD The main ones being Sandkitty and Sand, which I'm called by my guild, due to my main being named Sandfur, and I used to say "Meow" or "Mew" in guild chat a lot. Hence Sandkitty, and of course Sand is just a short version of Sandfur.

A lesser used one that I have is Ghost Girl, due to my love of... Ghost Pokemon! People who frequent the Pokemon thread would not be surprised by this whatsoever! And I'm also called Ghosty for the same reason. Heheh. *Hugs her legions of Shuppet* <3

Not gonna' put my name out there, but you can call me Saturo, Sat or Stereo and I'll respond. I've been using those so long they've become more of a name than my actual one. :D

Also, Sonata is totally nicknamed Sonnie. I'm petitioning for her to change her RL name to it.

"Uhmm... Hai guyz! Cud u peopl plz change sumbodys name to Sonnie? She called like Sonata or Silinerz..."

I also exist on DeviantArt.

Moderation note: Saturo is banned from all forums except the RP forum, and only allowed there until the current RP thread ends.

I had a friend in high school who would point at my calves and moo. I used to get so upset. It took me years to figure out that he was making a word play on "calves" and not calling me fat.

My real name is Jennifer -- me and at least half of the girls also born in 1983, if the 3-5 Jennifers per class at school are any indication.

Online, I usually go by Violetlight, my pen name at Fanfiction.net and Deviant Art. My msn friends (two of whom I actually met in RL) usually call me Violet, or just Vi.

Here, my WoW main's' name, Cerah, or my net nickname is fine. I guess because of the commonness of my own name, I like character names that sound common (Sarah, Emily), but are spelled differently (Cerah, Emielee). That, or it's the English geek in me.

I don't really feel like this is so much the "Post-Modern" era as much as its the "Pre-Zombie-Apocalpse" era. I consider myself more of a forward thinking guy and an era that just won't die is just as feasible as a coming era, where the dead come back.

Violetlight? Oh hey, I know you from Deviant Art! I was the one who argued with you over the fact that my main didn't have any of her old pets anymore and then over the Ironhide Devilsaur being a Transformers refference or not!

Funny how I was thinking about RL and online names this past week or so.

Tygamoon has been my first online name that I've stuck with. While making this hunter I wanted to name her Tiger (favorite animal), that was taken. Then there was Moon and that was gone as well. Nothing worked so I went with how it is now and have used it since then :) Over the years and through many friends it has been shortened to Tyga.

I flip/flop with it and it's cheesy factor. You know those guys who have names like Bluud or Ishootyou? Most times I don't feel bad about it and it doesn't sound that way in my head but I sometimes become overwheled by how stupid my name can seem to others lol. I really don't want to appear like that with my main character. Alts are fair game in my book though. So recently I've been wanting to change it to something more fluid and real sounding. (If I do I'll change it here for sure)

It's funny how much people put on names. You are given your name by your parents then expected to keep it for the rest of your life! Maybe even, depending on your culture, try to live up to it's meaning. I really enjoy the anonymity of the internet because it allows you to pick your own name in most everything. I've been debating on whether to talk to my Hun over me taking up my maternal grand parents last name. Not sure how traditional his views on last names will be lol. Not sharing my RL name here though, I don't like it and I know I'll feel weird doing it. But I'm not saying this place makes me uneasy. You guys rock!
