Indeed you are correct. Went to my wife's toon and tried it on her 74 hunter with 71 cat and herbing net her 4304 xp and her pet 2439 xp.

Killing a level 75 mob yielded 1139 xp to the pet.

My wife's second hunter, at level 74, can kill a normal mob and get ~950 xp.

If she harvests a plant, she gets over 4,000 xp.

My pets are only gaining 70-90 xp per normal mob kill outside of instances. It is definitely not limited to 80 heroics. And the speed at which a pet levels in Northrend heroics versus Cataclysm normals is really no different. XP is determined by mob level and normal versus elite, as far as I know.

Pet exp isn't bugged, they nerfed the amount of exp our pets are getting in 80 heroics. It's been discussed in a different thread I believe. I don't think it's limited to just Heroics. Funny thing is, is I was just about to post a new thread on if anybody else noticed if their new 'flaming boar/oil...

I re-tamed the Ghost Saber in 4.0.3a easily. Ran around and opened 4 figurines winthin a few minutes and he spawned. You may have just arrived after somebody else finished opening them all up and you just had to wait for respawns.

How much hp do you need? My hunter isn't exactly rolling in epics, so I'm considering just waiting until 85, or at least a bit of Cata quest gear.
